Deuteronomy 26:14

Deuteronomy 26:14

I have not eaten thereof in my mourning, neither have I taken away ought thereof for any unclean use, nor given ought thereof for the dead: but I have hearkened to the voice of the Lord my God, and have done according to all that thou hast commanded me.

a. ASV: I have not eaten thereof in my mourning, neither have I put away thereof, being unclean, nor given thereof for the dead: I have hearkened to the voice of Jehovah my God; I have done according to all that thou hast commanded me.

b. YLT: I have not eaten in mine affliction of it, nor have I put away of it for uncleanness, nor have I given of it for the dead; I have hearkened to the voice of Jehovah my God; I have done according to all that Thou hast commanded me;

c. Amplified Bible Classic: I have not eaten of the tithe in my mourning [making the tithe unclean], nor have I handled any of it when I was unclean, nor given any of it to the dead. I have hearkened to the voice of the Lord my God; I have done according to all that You have commanded me.

d. Septuagint: And in my distress I did not eat of them, I have not gathered of them for an unclean purpose, I have not given of them to the dead; I have hearkened to the voice of the Lord our God, I have done as thou hast commanded me.

e. Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings: I have not eaten of it in my intense mourning, I did not consume it in a state of contamination, and I did not give it for the needs of the dead; I have hearkened to the voice of HASHEM, my God; I have acted according to everything You commanded me.

1. “I have not eaten thereof in my mourning,,

a. [I have] not [Strong: 3808 lo' lo or lowi {lo}; or loh (Deut. 3:11) {lo}; a primitive particle; not (the simple or abs. negation); by implication, no; often used with other particles (as follows):--X before, + or else, ere, + except, ig(-norant), much, less, nay, neither, never, no((-ne), -r, (-thing)), (X as though...,(can-), for) not (out of), of nought, otherwise, out of, + surely, + as truly as, + of a truth, + verily, for want, + whether, without.]

1). Manners and Customs of the Bible: “There is no evidence of any allusion here to idolatrous customs. The reference is probably to the feasts which were given on funeral occasions to the friends assembled (Hosea 9:4). The custom still exists in Palestine. The phrase “given aught thereof for the dead” may have reference to the practice of sending provisions into a house of mourning; to which 2 Samuel 3:35, where David, on occasion of Abner’s death refused to eat the food which was set before him…See also Jeremiah 16:7, 8.”

2). Louis Goldberg, Bible Study Commentary On Deuteronomy: “…they had not offered any of this tithe to the dead, the last one in particular may have been a Canaanite ritual, Deuteronomy 14:1.

3). Perhaps this reference could be used to prohibit giving to dead churches.
