1). Joseph Augustus Seiss: The Old Testament speaks of another place in the underworld called in Hebrew 'Abaddon’ (Greek Apollyon), which our English Bible renders ‘destruction’. Thus we read ‘Hades is naked before him, and Abaddon hath no covering’ (Job 26:6). ‘Abaddon and death say, We have heard the fame thereof’ (Job 28:22). ‘It is a fire that consumeth to Abaddon’ (Job 31:12). ‘Shall thy loving kindness be declared in the grave, or thy faithfulness in Abaddon?’ (Psalm 88:11). ‘Hades and Abaddon are ever before the Lord’ (Proverbs 15:11). ‘Hades and Abaddon are never full’ (Proverbs 27:20). Abaddon thus connects with Sheol or Hades, but is a deeper darker, and a more wretched place. ‘The pit of the Abyss, referred to in Revelation 9:1-3, and from which came he plague of spirit-locusts, seems to identify with this Hebrew Abaddon; for the angel of this pit, and the King over these locusts, has a name ‘which in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.’ Nine times do we read of this Abyss in the New Testament . The demons, whom Christ cast out of the wretched man of Gadara, besought the Saviour not to command them into the Abyss (Luke 826-31). Paul says that our faith needs not to inquire ‘Who shall descend into the Abyss, that is, to bring Christ up again from among the dead’ (Romans 10:7)...Thus also the great Beast, the Antichrist, cometh up out of the Abyss (Revelation 11:7; 17:8). Abaddon and the Abyss would therefore seem to be the abode of demons, a sort of deeper pit beneath hades, where the more wicked and more base spirits, and other foul spirits of the lower orders are for the most part held prisoners till the day of final judgment.

1). All of the Messianic passages throughout the Old Testament are to be placed contextually in the brief mention of a thousand year period in this passage in Revelation 20.

2). John Walvoord, The Millennial Kingdom: Premillennialism is founded principally on interpretation of the Old Testament. Id interpreted literally, the Old Testament gives a clear picture of the prophetic expectation of Israel. They confidently anticipated the coming of a Savior and Deliverer, a Messiah who would be Prophet, Priest, and King. They expected that He would deliver them from their enemies and usher in a kingdom of righteousness, peace and prosperity upon a redeemed earth. It is hardly subject to dispute that the Old Testament presents such a picture, not in isolated texts, but in the constantly repeated declaration of most of the prophets. All the major prophets and practically all the minor prophets have Messianic sections picturing the restoration and glory of Israel in this future kingdom. This is so clear to competent students of the Old Testament that it is conceded by practically all parties that the Old Testament presents premillennial doctrine if interpreted literally.
