m. streets [Strong: 4113. plateia plat-i'-ah feminine of 4116; a wide "plat" or "place", i.e. open square:--street.]

1). This whole passage (Matthew 12:17-21) is a quote from Isaiah.

a). Isaiah 42:1-4  Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

42:2 He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.

42:3 A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.

42:4 He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.

b). Biblical scholars all agree that this verse reflects the gentleness and tenderness of Christ Jesus. That instead of breaking easily a bruised reed he would strengthen and heal it and instead of quenching completely a flax that was smoking he would cause to burn brightly again. In our weakest moments I believe we can be assured that Jesus does not reject us but would desire to encourage, strengthen, and empower us to serve him, and He alone has the ability to and desire to do so by the Spirit of God. Pray and he will hear you and give the grace necessary (Hebrews 4:16).
