And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!

1. “And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples…”


a. And [Strong: 2532. kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

g. brethren [Strong: 80. adephos ad-el-fos' from 1 (as a connective particle) and delphus (the womb); a brother (literally or figuratively) near or remote (much like 1):--brother.]


1). His family including his mother and his brothers came to where he was. It does not say anything about Joseph or his sisters. Joseph probably had already died and why his sisters were not mentioned is unknown. They had come because they were going to attempt to physically and forcibly remove him from the house. His family had just heard that Jesus was appointing apostles to go out and preach, heal the sick and cast out devils. The natural family of Jesus believed that Jesus was crazy, especially after he ordained the 12 apostles.


a). Mark 3:13-21And he goeth up into a mountain, and calleth unto him whom he would: and they came unto him.

3:14 And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,

3:15 And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:

3:16 And Simon he surnamed Peter;

3:17 And James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder:

3:18 And Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Canaanite,

3:19 And Judas Iscariot, which also betrayed him: and they went into an house.

3:20 And the multitude cometh together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread.

3:21 And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself.


2). When they caught up to him a crowd had gathered around the house and they could not get in so they stood outside and sent word to him that his family were outside and were desiring to speak with him. When in reality they wanted to lay hold on him and get him healed of his supposed mental instability. His family believed the lies that the religious leaders were spreading, that he was possessed by and unclean spirit. 


a). Matthew 12:46-50 While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him.

12:47 Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee.

12:48 But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?

12:49 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! 

12:50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.


b). Mrk 3:30-35 Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit.

3:31 There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him.

3:32 And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee.

3:33 And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren?

3:34 And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!

3:35 For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.


3). Blood is thicker than water, but spirit is thicker than blood. Spirit relationships through the new birth, the born again experience, are closer than blood relatives. Jesus placed a higher priority on the spirit than the blood. 


a).   Matthew 10:34-40 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

10:35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

10:36 And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.

10:37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy or me.

10:38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.

10:39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

10:40 He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
