And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.

Daniel Wattland D.D Volume 4, reprinted from The Permissive Sense, Troy Edward’s: It is frequent in holy Scripture, to call that the Lord’s doing which he only permits to be done, because he has the supreme direction of all things, and he governs the event. Wicked devices proceed from wicked men: but that they prevail and take effect is owing to the hand of God directing and ordering where they shall light, and what shall be the issue of them. 

2). 1). The Permissive Sense, Troy Edwards: The permissive verbs are connected to God’s forsaking in Judges 6:13. The Common English Bible provides the more accurate rendering of this passage.

a). Common English Bible: But Gideon replied to him, “With all due respect, my Lord, if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his amazing works that our ancestors recounted to us, saying, ‘Didn’t the Lord bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has abandoned us and allowed Midian to overpower us.”

3). Deuteronomy 31:16-18 And the Lord said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers; and this people will rise up, and go a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land, whither they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them.

31:17 Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us?

31:18 And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods.
