Cursed be he that lieth with his father's wife; because he uncovereth his father's skirt. And all the people shall say, Amen.

1. “Cursed be he that lieth with his father's wife; because he uncovereth his father's skirt…”


a. Cursed [Strong: 779 ʼârar, aw-rar'; a primitive root; to execrate:—× bitterly curse.]

1). The next four curses attempt to prevent a breakdown of commandment 7 within the society. Illicit sex is detestable to God (Leviticus 18:6-23), and the possibilities are: the person who sleeps with his father’s wife (the stepmother Deuteronomy 27:20; 22:30; Leviticus 18:8, 20:11); the one who commits besteality (Deuteronomy 27:21; Exodus 22:19; Leviticus 18:23; 20:15); the man who has sex relations with his sister (Deuteronomy 27:22, and the rule also applies to a brother and sister who have only one parent in common; and finally, the person who has relations with his mother-in-law; (Deuteronomy 27:23; Leviticus 18:17; 20:14).


2). There are a number of incidents in Scripture that this touches on. First is the curse brought upon Rueben because of his fornication with his fathers wife. 


a). Genesis 35:22  And it came to pass, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine: and Israel heard it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:


(1) Genesis 49:3, 4 Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power:

49:4 Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father's bed; then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch.


(2) This was of course before the Law was given and Rueben was not put to death, but he and his descendant’s did reap the fruit. Rueben and the tribe as a whole would not excel.


3). The incident at Corinth where a man was sleeping with his stepmother.


a). 1 Corinthians 5:1 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.


b). UnderUnder the Old Covenant this sin would have demanded the death penalty for both the man and the woman. 


c). Leviticus 20:11 And the man that lieth with his father’s wife hath uncovered his father’s nakedness: both of them shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. 


d). Here we will see some of the stark differences between the Old Covenant and the New Covenant. Under the Mosaic Covenant he would have been put to death but under the New Covenant he was excommunicated from the local body.


4). The last incident is Noah, because of drunkenness being uncovered in his tent. It does not say how Noah became uncovered. Personally I lean toward either Ham or Canaan did something to Noah while he was drunkenly unconscious. Some scholars believe that something sexual occurred while Noah was drunk. The phrase “uncover the nakedness” is a euphemism for sexual intercourse. It is used in Leviticus 18:6-19. It is also found in Ezekiel.

 

a).  Ezekiel 16:36, 37 Thus saith the Lord God; Because thy filthiness was poured out, and thy nakedness discovered through thy whoredoms with thy lovers, and with all the idols of thy abominations, and by the blood of thy children, which thou didst give unto them;

16:37 Behold, therefore I will gather all thy lovers, with whom thou hast taken pleasure, and all them that thou hast loved, with all them that thou hast hated; I will even gather them round about against thee, and will discover thy nakedness unto them, that they may see all thy nakedness.

 

b). Ezekiel 23:10 These discovered her nakedness: they took her sons and her daughters, and slew her with the sword: and she became famous among women; for they had executed judgment upon her.
