2 Timothy 1:5

When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

a. NLT: I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you.

b. NIV: I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.

    

c. YLT: Taking remembrance of the unfeigned faith that is in thee, that dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice, and I am persuaded that also in thee.

d. Amplified Bible Classic: I am calling up memories of your sincere and unqualified faith (the leaning of your entire personality on God in Christ in absolute trust and confidence in His power, wisdom, and goodness), [a faith] that first lived permanently in [the heart of] your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am [fully] persuaded, [dwells] in you also.

e. Worrell Translation: Having a remembrance of the unfeigned faith which is in you; which, indeed, dwelt first in your grand-mother Lois, and your mother Eunice; and, I have become persuaded, in you also.

f. Wuest Translation: Having been reminded of the un-hypocritical faith which is in you, which is of such a nature as to have been at home first in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice, and concerning which I have come to a settled persuasion is at home in your also.

1. “When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee…”

a. When I call [Strong: 2983 lambano lam-ban'-o a prolonged form of a primary verb, which is use only as an alternate in certain tenses; to take (in very many applications, literally and figuratively (properly objective or active, to get hold of; whereas 1209 is rather subjective or passive, to have offered to one; while 138 is more violent, to seize or remove)):--accept, + be amazed, assay, attain, bring, X when I call, catch, come on (X unto), + forget, have, hold, obtain, receive (X after), take (away, up).]

b. to remembrance [Strong: 5280 hupomnesis hoop-om'-nay-sis from 5279; a reminding or (reflexively) recollection:--remembrance.]

c. the unfeigned [Strong: 505 anupokritos an-oo-pok'-ree-tos from 1 (as a negative particle) and a presumed derivative of 5271; undissembled, i.e. sincere:--without dissimulation (hypocrisy), unfeigned.] [Zodhiates: anupokritos; a-without; hupokrinomai-to pretend;  Originally it meant inexperienced in the art of acting. In the N.T. it came to mean one without hypocrisy or pretense, unfeigned, genuine, real, true, sincere.]

d. faith [Strong: 4102 pistis pis'-tis from 3982; persuasion, i.e. credence; moral conviction (of religious truth, or the truthfulness of God or a religious teacher), especially reliance upon Christ for salvation; abstractly, constancy in such profession; by extension, the system of religious (Gospel) truth itself:--assurance, belief, believe, faith, fidelity.]

e. 2. “…which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice…”

b. dwelt [Strong: 1774 enoikeo en-oy-keh'-o from 1722 and 3611; to inhabit (figuratively):--dwell in.]

c. first [Strong: 4412 proton pro'-ton neuter of 4413 as adverb (with or without 3588); firstly (in time, place, order, or importance):--before, at the beginning, chiefly (at, at the) first (of all).]

i. mother [Strong: 3384 meter may'-tare apparently a primary word; a "mother" (literally or figuratively, immediate or remote):--mother.]

j. Eunice [Strong: 2131 Eunike yoo-nee'-kay from 2095 and 3529; victorious; Eunice, a Jewess:--Eunice.]

1). Paul was probably referring to the Jewish faith of his mother and grandmother. Timothy’s mother was a Jew.

3. “…and I am persuaded that in thee also.”

a. and [Strong: 1161 e deh a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

b. I am persuaded [Strong: 3982 peitho pi'-tho a primary verb; to convince (by argument, true or false); by analogy, to pacify or conciliate (by other fair means); reflexively or passively, to assent (to evidence or authority), to rely (by inward certainty):--agree, assure, believe, have confidence, be (wax) conflent, make friend, obey, persuade, trust, yield.]

c. that [Strong: 3754 hoti hot'-ee neuter of 3748 as conjunction; demonstrative, that (sometimes redundant); causative, because:--as concerning that, as though, because (that), for (that), how (that), (in) that, though, why.]

1). Since his father was a Greek, the probable source for his mother being a Jew was the grandmother. The only other explanation, an improbable one, was that the grandmother received Christ first, then the mother, then Timothy.

a). Acts 16:1 “Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek:

2). In 2 Timothy 3:15 Paul wrote that Timothy had been taught the Scriptures from infancy. When Timothy was an infant, the only scriptures were the Old Testament.

a). 2 Timothy 3:16 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Jesus Christ.

b). child [Strong: 1025 brephos bref'-os of uncertain affinity; an infant (properly, unborn) literally or figuratively:--babe, (young) child, infant.] [Zodhaiates: unborn child, Luke 1:41; newborn child, Luke 2:12; older infant, Luke 18:15.]

3). Timothy was already a disciple in Acts 16:1-3, approximately 52 A.D. Paul called Timothy his “son in the faith in 1Timothy 1:2. There is universal agreement that Paul led Timothy to the Lord. The only reasonable conclusion is that the faith that Paul spoke of was the family’s Jewish faith.
