Jude 10



Jude 10

But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves.

a. NLT: But these people scoff at things they do not understand. Like unthinking animals, they do whatever their instincts tell them, and so they bring about their own destruction.

b. NIV: Yet these people slander whatever they do not understand, and the very things they do understand by instinct—as irrational animals do—will destroy them.

c. YLT: And these, as many things indeed as they have not known, they speak evil of; and as many things as naturally (as the irrational beasts) they understand, in these they are corrupted;

1. “But these speak evil of those things which they know not:…”

a. But [Strong: 1161 de deh a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

c. speak evil [Strong: 987 blasphemeo blas-fay-meh'-o from 989; to vilify; specially, to speak impiously:--(speak) blaspheme(-er, -mously, -my), defame, rail on, revile, speak evil.]    [Zodhiates: To blaspheme, revile. To hurt the reputation or smite with reports or words, speak evil of, slander, rail.]

d. of those things which [Strong: 3745 hosos hos'-os by reduplication from 3739; as (much, great, long, etc.) as:--all (that), as (long, many, much) (as), how great (many, much), (in-)asmuch as, so many as, that (ever), the more, those things, what (great, -soever), wheresoever, wherewithsoever, which, X while, who(-soever).]

e. [Strong: 3303 men men a primary particle; properly, indicative of affirmation or concession (in fact); usually followed by a contrasted clause with 1161 (this one, the former, etc.):--even, indeed, so, some, truly, verily. Often compounded with other particles in an intensive or asseverative sense.]

1). 2 Peter 2:12 “…these…speak evil of the things that they understand not;”

a). understand not [Strong: 50 agnoeo ag-no-eh'-o from 1 (as a negative particle) and 3539; not to know (through lack of information or intelligence); by implication, to ignore (through disinclination):--(be) ignorant(-ly), not know, not understand, unknown.] [Zodhiates: To be ignorant of, unacquainted with.]

2. “…but what they know naturally, as brute beasts…”

a. but [Strong: 1161 de deh a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

c. [they] know [Strong: 1987 epistamai ep-is'-tam-ahee apparently a middle voice of 2186 (with 3563 implied); to put the mind upon, i.e. comprehend, or be acquainted with:--know, understand.]

d. naturally [Strong: 5447 phusikos foo-see-koce' adverb from 5446; "physically", i.e. (by implication) instinctively:--naturally.] [Zodhiates: Naturally, by instinct.]

e. as [Strong: 5613 hos hoce probably adverb of comparative from 3739; which how, i.e. in that manner (very variously used, as follows):--about, after (that), (according) as (it had been, it were), as soon (as), even as (like), for, how (greatly), like (as, unto), since, so (that), that, to wit, unto, when(-soever), while, X with all speed.]

f. brute [Strong: 249 alogos al'-og-os from 1 (as a negative particle) and 3056; irrational:--brute, unreasonable.] [Zodhiates: Unendowed with reason, irrational, brute unreasonable, absurd.]

1). Could this be a word play? Logos is the word used in John 1:1 to describe the preexistent Christ. Perhaps the use of alogos is another witness to these being not saved? Without Christ?

g. beasts [Strong: 2226 zoon dzo'-on neuter of a derivative of 2198; a live thing, i.e. an animal:--beast.] [Zodhiates: A living creature, an animal.]

1). 1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

2). 1 Corinthians 1:18-21 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish, foolishness; but unto us which are saved, it is the power of God.
1:19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.
1:20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? Hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?
1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

a). wise [Strong: 4680 sophos sof-os' akin to saphes (clear); wise (in a most general application):--wise.]  [Zodhiates: “In Cllasical Greek it not only described respected philosophers and other truly learned men but was also appropriated by vain quibblers and rhetoriticians…”

b). scribe [Strong: 1122 grammateus gram-mat-yooce' from 1121. a writer, i.e. (professionally) scribe or secretary:--scribe, town-clerk.] [Zodhiates: A scribe or writer].

c). disputer [Strong: 4804 suzetetes sood-zay-tay-tace' from 4802; a disputant, i.e. sophist:--disputer.] [Zodhiates: A debater, reasoner, disputant, a sophist.

3. “…in those things they corrupt themselves.”

a. in [Strong: 1722 en en a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation of rest (intermediate between 1519 and 1537); "in," at, (up-)on, by, etc.:--about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as, at, before, between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (... sake of), + give self wholly to, (here-)in(-to, -wardly), X mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, X outwardly, one, X quickly, X shortly, (speedi-)ly, X that, X there(-in, -on), through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in). b. those things [Strong: 5125 toutois too'-toice dative case plural masculine or neuter of 3778; to (for, in, with or by) these (persons or things):--such, them, there(-in, -with), these, this, those.]

c. they corrupt themselves [Strong: 5351 phtheiro fthi'-ro probably strengthened from phthio (to pine or waste); properly, to shrivel or wither, i.e. to spoil (by any process) or (generally) to ruin (especially figuratively, by moral influences, to deprave):--corrupt (self), defile, destroy.]

1). Because Jude 10 and 2 Peter 2:12 are closely linked to the homosexual element in Jude 7 & 8 and 2 Peter 2:6-9, the “corruption” that Jude 10  is referring to, is that of Hosea 9:9.

a). Hosea 9:7-9 The days of visitation are come, the days of recompence are come; Israel shall know it: the prophet is a fool, the spiritual man is mad, for the multitude of thine iniquity, and the great hatred.
9:8 The watchman of Ephraim was with my God: but the prophet is a snare of a fowler in all his ways, and hatred in the house of his God.
9:9 They have deeply corrupted themselves, as in the days of Gibeah: therefore he will remember their iniquity, he will visit their sins.

b). In Hosea 9:7-9, the passage  is referring to the incident of Judges 19, the corruption of the inhabitants of Gibeah was demonstrated in their protection of a group of homosexuals that in fact ignited a civil war in Israel. It is no wonder then that the apostate side of Christianity wants to abolish all stigmas that have been applied to same sex lust and behavior. What we are seeing in Christianity today is a fulfillment of prophetic Scripture.
