Genesis 19:15

Genesis 19:15

And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.

a. NLT: At dawn the next morning the angels became insistent. “Hurry,” they said to Lot. “Take your wife and your two daughters who are here. Get out right now, or you will be swept away in the destruction of the city!”

b. NIV: With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished.”

c. Amplified Bible:  When morning came, the angels urged Lot to hurry, saying, Arise, take your wife and two daughters who are here [and be off], lest you [too] be consumed and swept away in the iniquity and punishment of the city.

d. Septuagint: But when it was morning, the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise and take thy wife, and thy two daughters whom thou hast, and go forth; lest thou also be destroyed with the iniquities of the city.

e. Stone Edition Torah/Writings/Prophets: Just as dawn was breaking, the angels urged Lot on saying: “Get up—take your wife and your two daughters who are present, lest you be swept away because of the sin of the city!”

1. “And when the morning arose…”

a. when [3644 * kmow] [Strong: a form of the prefix "k-", but used separately (Compare 3651); as, thus, so:--according to, (such) as (it were, well as), in comparison of, like (as, to, unto), thus, when, worth.]

1). The angels arrived in Sodom “at even”, around 6 PM. They entered Lot’s house shortly after. The whole ordeal, the meal, the gathering of the mob and the attempted violence, and the attempt of Lot to convince his sons-in-law to leave Sodom lasted about 12 hours.

2. “…then the angels hastened Lot…”

a. angels [4397 * mal’ak] [Strong:  from an unused root meaning to despatch as a deputy; a messenger; specifically, of God, i.e. an angel (also a prophet, priest or teacher):--ambassador, angel, king, messenger.]

b. hastened [213 * ‘uwts] [Strong:   a primitive root; to press; (by implication) to be close, hurry, withdraw:--(make) haste(-n, -y), labor, be narrow.]

c. Lot [3876 * Lowt] [Strong: the same as 3875; Lot, Abraham's nephew:--Lot.]

After Lot came back from trying to convince his sons in law about the imminent destruction, the angels attempted to get Lot and his family to leave. Scripture says they “hastened Lot”, as the morning arose. They tried to hurry Lot and his family to leave before they were destroyed with the rest of the city. It is very probable that Lot and his family were delaying their escape out of concern for the rest of their family. The city was to be destroyed and their family didn’t believe it, so in confusing desperation they delayed to leave.

c. wife [802 * ‘ishshah] [Strong: feminine of 376 or 582; irregular plural, nashiym {naw-sheem'}; a woman (used in the same wide sense as 582):--(adulter)ess, each, every, female, X many, + none, one, + together, wife, woman. Often unexpressed in English.]

d. two [8147 * shnayim] [Strong: dual of 8145; feminine shttayim {shet-tah'-yim}; two; also (as ordinal) twofold:--both, couple, double, second, twain, + twelfth, + twelve, + twenty (sixscore) thousand, twice, two.]

e. daughters [1323 * bath] [Strong: from 1129 (as feminine of 1121); a daughter (used in the same wide sense as other terms of relationship, literally and figuratively):--apple (of the eye), branch, company, daughter, X first, X old, + owl, town, village.]

f. which are here [4672 * matsa’] [Strong: a primitive root; properly, to come forth to, i.e. appear or exist; transitively, to attain, i.e. find or acquire; figuratively, to occur, meet or be present:--+ be able, befall, being, catch, X certainly, (cause to) come (on, to, to hand), deliver, be enough (cause to) find(-ing, occasion, out), get (hold upon), X have (here), be here, hit, be left, light (up-)on, meet (with), X occasion serve, (be) present, ready, speed, suffice, take hold on.]
