e. Stone Edition Torah/Writings/Prophets: Lot went out to them to the entrance, and shut the door behind him.

1. “And Lot went out at the door unto them…”

a. Lot [3876 * Lowt] [Strong: the same as 3875; Lot, Abraham's nephew:--Lot.]

b. went out [3318 * yatsa’] [Strong: a primitive root; to go (causatively, bring) out, in a great variety of applications, literally and figuratively, direct and proxim.:--X after, appear, X assuredly, bear out, X begotten, break out, bring forth (out, up), carry out, come (abroad, out, thereat, without), + be condemned, depart(-ing, -ure), draw forth, in the end, escape, exact, fail, fall (out), fetch forth (out), get away (forth, hence, out), (able to, cause to, let) go abroad (forth, on, out), going out, grow, have forth (out), issue out, lay (lie) out, lead out, pluck out, proceed, pull out, put away, be risen, X scarce, send with commandment, shoot forth, spread, spring out, stand out, X still, X surely, take forth (out), at any time, X to (and fro), utter.]

c. door [6607 * pethach] [Strong: from 6605; an opening (literally), i.e. door (gate) or entrance way:--door, entering (in), entrance (-ry), gate, opening, place.]

2. “…and shut the door after him.”

a. shut [5462 * cagar] [Strong: a primitive root; to shut up; figuratively, to surrender:--close up, deliver (up), give over (up), inclose, X pure, repair, shut (in, self, out, up, up together), stop, X straitly.

b. door [1817 * deleth] [Strong: from 1802; something swinging, i.e. the valve of a door:--door (two-leaved), gate, leaf, lid.]

c. after him [310 * ‘achar] [Strong: from 309; properly, the hind part; generally used as an adverb or conjunction, after (in various senses):--after (that, -ward), again, at, away from, back (from, -side), behind, beside, by, follow (after, -ing), forasmuch, from, hereafter, hinder end, + out (over) live, + persecute, posterity, pursuing, remnant, seeing, since, thence(-forth), when, with.]

1). It is clear from the context and it will be proven in the following verses, that the demand of the mob outside Lot’s door demanding to be given the male strangers in order to use them is what motivated Lot to go out the door. I personally believe that when the angels first met Lot at the gate he did not know they were angels, but after spending two hours with them and sharing a meal, he probably knew by then. It is a fact though that unless God allows us to know an individual is an angel we will be clueless.  In Hebrews 13:2 this is made clear, Given the ominous task the angels were sent into Sodom for, I don’t believe their identity was hidden to Lot. It is probably this knowledge along with some other factors that led Lot to say some desperate things.
