Leviticus 1:2
Speak unto the children of Israel,
and say unto them, If any man of you bring an offering unto the LORD, ye shall
bring your offering of the cattle, even of the herd, and of the flock.
a. NLT: “Give
the following instructions to the people of Israel. When you present an animal
as an offering to the LORD, you may take it from your herd of cattle or your
flock of sheep and goats.
b. NIV: “Speak
to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When anyone among you brings an offering to
the LORD, bring as your offering an animal from either the herd or the flock.
c. YLT: 'Speak
unto the sons of Israel, and thou hast said unto them, Any man of you when he
doth bring near an offering to Jehovah, out of the cattle -- out of the herd,
or out of the flock -- ye do bring near your offering.
d. Amplified Bible: Say
to the Israelites, When any man of you brings an offering to the Lord, you
shall bring your offering of [domestic] animals from the herd or from the
flock.
e. Septuagint: If [any] man of you shall bring gifts to the Lord, ye
shall bring your gifts of the cattle and of the oxen and of the sheep.

1. “Speak unto the children of
Israel, and say unto them…”

primitive root; perhaps properly, to arrange; but used figuratively (of words),

2. “…If any man of you bring an
offering unto the LORD…”

[Strong: from 7126; something brought near the altar, i.e. a sacrificial

3. “…ye shall bring your offering of
the cattle, even of the herd, and of the flock.”

purpose:--(cause to) approach, (cause to) bring (forth, near), (cause to) come
(near, nigh), (cause to) draw near (nigh), go (near), be at hand, join, be

[Strong: from 7126; something brought near the altar, i.e. a sacrificial

[Strong: from an unused root (probably meaning to be mute); properly, a dumb
beast; especially any large quadruped or animal (often collective):--beast,
cattle.]
d. of the herd [1241 * baqar]
[Strong: from 1239; beef cattle or an animal of the ox family of either
gender (as used for plowing); collectively, a herd:-- beeve, bull (+ -ock), +
calf, + cow, great (cattle), + heifer, herd, kine, ox.]
e. of the flock [6629 * tso’n]
[Strong: from an unused root meaning to migrate; a collective name for a flock
(of sheep or goats); also figuratively (of men):--(small) cattle, flock (+ -s),
lamb (+ -s), sheep((-cote, -fold, -shearer, -herds)).]
1). The different kinds of animals
were because of the different financial abilities of the people.
a). The rich: a bull from the herd: Leviticus: 1:5.
b). Middle Class: a male sheep from the herd: Leviticus
1:10.
c). Poor: two turtle doves or young pigeons: Leviticus 1:14.
2). Many of the things done under
the Old Covenant were merely shadows of what was to take place under the grace
dispensation. The Tabernacle, the Priesthood, even the garments and tasks of
the priests and Levites give us word pictures of the New Covenant players, such
as the High Priesthood of Christ, the priesthood of the believer and just
living the Christian life.
a). Hebrews 10:1 For the law having a shadow of good things
to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices
which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.
