Leviticus 1:5

And he shall kill the bullock before the LORD: and the priests, Aaron's sons, shall bring the blood, and sprinkle the blood round about upon the altar that is by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

a. ASV: And he shall kill the bullock before Jehovah: and Aaron’s sons, the priests, shall present the blood, and sprinkle the blood round about upon the altar that is at the door of the tent of meeting.

b. YLT: And he hath slaughtered the son of the herd before Jehovah; and sons of Aaron, the priests, have brought the blood near, and sprinkled the blood on the altar round about, which is at the opening of the tent of meeting.

c. Classic Amplified Bible: The man shall kill the young bull before the Lord, and the priests, Aaron’s sons, shall present the blood and dash [it] round about upon the altar that is at the door of the Tent of Meeting.

1. “And he shall kill the bullock before the LORD…”

1). Louis Goldberg, Leviticus: “In every case, except for the offering of birds, the offerer himself killed the animal sacrifice. Perhaps the reason for this was that since the offerer was already identified with the animal, he had to take action involved in the lesson of the offering. In Leviticus 1, the offering is dedication, and the slaughtering of the animal demonstrated dedication. It was as if the offerer himself laid down his life in dedication before the Lord.”

2). Chumash: “…the slaughter may be performed be anyone.”

3). Here the person becomes personally involved because of his already being identified with the animal. Just as in the New Covenant we become identified with Christ (Galatians 2:20; Romans 6:3-11).

2. “…and the priests, Aaron's sons, shall bring the blood…”

a. [and the] priests [Strong: 3548 kôhên, ko-hane'; active participle of H3547; literally one officiating, a priest; also (by courtesy) an acting priest (although a layman):—chief ruler, × own, priest, prince, principal officer.]

b. Aaron’s [Strong: 175 ʼAhărôwn, a-har-one'; of uncertain derivation; Aharon, the brother of Moses:—Aaron.]

e. [the] blood [Strong: 1818 dâm, dawm; from H1826 (compare H119); blood (as that which when shed causes death) of man or an animal; by analogy, the juice of the grape; figuratively (especially in the plural) bloodshed (i.e. drops of blood):—blood(-y, -guiltiness), (-thirsty), + innocent.]

1). The job of Aaron’s sons, the priests was to catch the blood and do with it whatever was required.

2). Chumash: “After the slaughter, the Kohanim are to receive the blood in a vessel so that it can be transported to the Altar. This is the first service performed by Kohanim.”

3. “...and sprinkle the blood round about upon the altar that is by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.”
