Leviticus 1:9

Leviticus 1:9

But his inwards and his legs shall he wash in water: and the priest shall burn all on the altar, to be a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.

a. ASV: But its inwards and its legs shall he wash with water. And the priest shall burn the whole on the altar, for a burnt-offering, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto Jehovah.

b. YLT: And its inwards and its legs he doth wash with water; and the priest hath made perfume with the whole on the altar, a burnt-offering, a fire-offering of sweet fragrance to Jehovah.

c. Classic Amplified Bible: But its entrails and its legs he shall wash with water. And the priest shall burn all of it on the altar for a burnt offering, an offering by fire, a sweet and satisfying odor to the Lord.

d. Septuagint: And the entrails and the feet they shall wash in water, and the priests shall put all on the altar: it is a burnt-offering, a sacrifice, a smell of sweet savour to the Lord.

e. Stone Edition Chumash: He shall wash its innards and its feet with water; and the Kohen shall cause it all to go up in smoke on the Altar--and elevation-offering, a fire-offering, a satisfying aroma to HASHEM.

1. “But his inwards and his legs shall he wash in water…”

a. [But his] inwards [Strong: 7130 qereb, keh'-reb; from H7126; properly, the nearest part, i.e. the center, whether literal, figurative or adverbial (especially with preposition):—× among, × before, bowels, × unto charge, eat (up), × heart, × him, × in, inward (× -ly, part, -s, thought), midst, out of, purtenance, × therein, × through, × within self.]

b. [and his] legs [Strong: 3767 kârâʻ, kaw-raw'; from H3766; the leg (from the knee to the ankle) of men or locusts (only in the dual):—leg.]

c. [shall he] wash [Strong: 7364 râchats, raw-khats'; a primitive root; to lave (the whole or a part of a thing):—bathe (self), wash (self).]

d. [in] water [Strong: 4325 mayim, mah'-yim; dual of a primitive noun (but used in a singular sense); water; figuratively, juice; by euphemism, urine, semen:— piss, wasting, water(-ing, (-course, -flood, -spring)).

1). Here the duties switch to the one presenting the sacrifice. It is his responsibility to wash the inwards and the legs. This speaks to our obedience to the Scriptures.

a). 2 Corinthians 7:1 Having  therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

b). ). Hebrews 10:19-22 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,
10:20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the vail, that is to say, his flesh;
10:21 And having a high priest over the house of God;
10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

c). 1 Peter 1:22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit…”

d). Psalm 119:9 Where withal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed there to according to thy word.

2.  “…and the priest shall burn all on the altar, to be a burnt sacrifice…”

a. [and the] priest [Strong: 3548 kôhên, ko-hane'; active participle of H3547; literally one officiating, a priest; also (by courtesy) an acting priest (although a layman):—chief ruler, × own, priest, prince, principal officer.]

b. [shall] burn [Strong: 6999  qâṭar, kaw-tar'; a primitive root (identical with through the idea of fumigation in a close place and perhaps thus driving out the occupants); to smoke, i.e. turn into fragrance by fire (especially as an act of worship):—burn (incense, sacrifice) (upon), (altar for) incense, kindle, offer (incense, a sacrifice).]

c. all [Strong: 3605 kol kole or (Jer. 33:8) kowl {kole}; from 3634; properly, the whole; hence, all, any or every (in the singular only, but often in a plural sense):--(in) all (manner, (ye)), altogether, any (manner), enough, every (one, place, thing), howsoever, as many as, (no-)thing, ought, whatsoever, (the) whole, whoso(-ever).]

d. [on the] altar [Strong: 4196 mizbêach, miz-bay'-akh; from H2076; an altar:—altar.]

e. [to be a] burnt sacrifice [Strong: 5930 ʻôlâh, o-law'; or עוֹלָה ʻôwlâh; feminine active participle of H5927; a step or (collectively, stairs, as ascending); usually a holocaust (as going up in smoke):—ascent, burnt offering (sacrifice), go up to.]

1). Here again the duties for the job switch back to the priest. The priest then burns all the sacrifice on the altar. In a burnt offering there is nothing left.  As we present our bodies as living sacrifices to the Lord, we also will give off a sweet smelling savour.

a). 2 Corinthians 2:14-16 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.
2:15 For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:
2:16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?

2). In the New Covenant we are that sacrifice, we are the priest and we are the offerer.

3. “...an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.”

a. [an] offering made by fire [Strong: 801 ʼishshâh, ish-shaw'; the same as H800, but used in a liturgical sense; properly, a burnt-offering; but occasionally of any sacrifice:—(offering, sacrifice), (made) by fire.]

b. [of a] sweet [Strong:  5207 nîychôwach, nee-kho'-akh; or נִיחֹחַ nîychôach; from H5117; properly, restful, i.e. pleasant; abstractly, delight:—sweet (odour).]

c. savour [Strong: 7381 rêyach, ray'-akh; from H7306; odor (as if blown):—savour, scent, smell.]

d. [unto the] LORD [Strong: 3068 Yᵉhôvâh, yeh-ho-vaw'; from H1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jeho-vah, Jewish national name of God:—Jehovah, the Lord.]
