“Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs…”
a. Speaking
[2980 * laleo] [Strong: a prolonged form of an otherwise obsolete verb; to
talk, i.e. utter words:--preach, say, speak (after), talk, tell, utter.]
b. to
yourselves [1438 * heautou] [Strong: from a reflexive pronoun otherwise
obsolete and the genitive case (dative case or accusative case) of 846; him-
(her-, it-, them-, also (in conjunction with the personal pronoun of the other
persons) my-, thy-, our-, your-) self (selves), etc.:--alone, her (own, -self),
(he) himself, his (own), itself, one (to) another, our (thine) own(-selves), +
that she had, their (own, own selves), (of) them(-selves), they, thyself, you,
your (own, own conceits, own selves, -selves).]
c. in psalms
[5568 * psalmos] [Thayer: a striking, twanging, of a striking the chords of a
musical instrument, of a pious song, a psalm.][Zodhiates: In all probability
the psalms of Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16 are the inspired Psalms of the
Hebrew Canon.]
1). Psalm
95:1-3 O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the
rock of our salvation.
Let us
come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him
with psalms.
For the
LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
2). Psalm
9:1, 2 I will praise thee, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all
thy marvellous works.
I will be
glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High.
d. and
[2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and
sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often
used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and,
also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
e. hymns
[5215 * hymnos] [Zodhiates: A song or hymn in honor of God…Whereas a psalm is
the story of man’s deliverance or a commemoration of mercies received, a hymn
is a manificat, adeclaration of how great someone is…a direct address of praise
and glory to God.]
f. and [2532
* kai] [Strong: apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and
sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often
used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and,
also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
g. spiritual
[4152 * pneumatikos] [Thayer: relating to the human spirit, or rational soul,
as part of the man which is akin to God and serves as his instrument or organ,
that which possesses the nature of the rational soul, belonging to a spirit, or
a being higher than man but inferior to God, belonging to the Divine Spirit, of
God the Holy Spirit, one who is filled with and governed by the Spirit of God,
pertaining to the wind or breath; windy, exposed to the wind, blowing.]
1).
Spiritual songs will match with what the Spirit has given us in the written
word. Paul under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost said the “words” with which
the Holy Ghost teaches are “spiritual”.
a). 1
Corinthians 2:12, 13 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the
spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to
us of God.
2:13 Which
things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which
the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
h. songs
[5603 * ode] [Vine: "an ode, song," is always used in the NT (as in
the Sept.), in praise of God or Christ; in Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16 the
adjective "spiritual" is added, because the word in itself is generic
and might be used of songs anything but spiritual;][Zodhiates: “Paul qualifies
it in Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16 as spiritual songs in association with
psalms and hymns, because ode by itself might mean any kind of song…”]
1). Slow
anointed worship speaks of intimacy where the weapons are put aside and we draw
near to our Father the lover of our soul. And oh the grace flows as we sing.
a). Colossians
3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you
richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns
and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
