1). Albert Barnes Commentary: Obed-edom was a Levite of the family of Merari, being 1 Chronicles 15:18-24; 1 Chronicles 16:38; a son of Jeduthun, who was a Merarite. He was a porter, a player on the harp, and was one of the Levites especially designated to take part in the musical services on the occasion of bringing up the ark to Zion, and to minister before it when brought up. He is called a Gittite perhaps from Gath-Rimmon, in Manasseh, which belonged to the Kohathites Joshua 21:25. Marriage with a Kohathite, or some other cause, would account for his dwelling in a Kohathite city.

a). 1 Chronicles 15:18-24 And with them their brethren of the second degree, Zechariah, Ben, and Jaaziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, Eliab, and Benaiah, and Maaseiah, and Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah, and Obededom, and Jeiel, the porters.
15:19 So the singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, were appointed to sound with cymbals of brass;
15:20 And Zechariah, and Aziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, and Eliab, and Maaseiah, and Benaiah, with psalteries on Alamoth;
15:21 And Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah, and Obededom, and Jeiel, and Azaziah, with harps on the Sheminith to excel.
15:22 And Chenaniah, chief of the Levites, was for song: he instructed about the song, because he was skilful.
15:23 And Berechiah and Elkanah were doorkeepers for the ark.
15:24 And Shebaniah, and Jehoshaphat, and Nethaneel, and Amasai, and Zechariah, and Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, did blow with the trumpets before the ark of God: and Obededom and Jehiah were doorkeepers for the ark.

2). Obededom [Unger’s Bible Dictionary: (obededom-servant of Edom) A Levite of the family of the Korhites, and belonging to the class of doorkeepers, 1 Chronicles 15:18, 24. He is called a Gittite from his birthplace, the Levitical city of Gath-rimmon, in the tribe of Dan. After the death of Uzzah, the ark, which was being conducted from the house of Abinadab in Gibeah to the city of David, was carried aside into the house of Obededom, where it continued for three months.]

3). He is called a Gittite probably from the place of his birth or residence, Gath-rimmon, which was a Levitical city that replaced the Philistine city of Gath.

a). Joshua 21:1-3 Then came near the heads of the fathers of the Levites unto Eleazar the priest, and unto Joshua the son of Nun, and unto the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel;
21:2 And they spake unto them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, The LORD commanded by the hand of Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with the suburbs thereof for our cattle.
21:3 And the children of Israel gave unto the Levites out of their inheritance, at the commandment of the LORD, these cities and their suburbs.

b). Joshua 21:24, 25 Aijalon with her suburbs, Gathrimmon with her suburbs; four cities.
21:25 And out of the half tribe of Manasseh, Tanach with her suburbs, and Gathrimmon with her suburbs; two cities.
