1.
“And David danced before the LORD with all his might…”
a. David [1732

b. danced
[3769 * karar] [Gesenius: to whirl, dance whirling, dancing, to exult, to leap.]
[Strongs: to dance (i.e. whirl): -dance(-ing).]
1). Spurgeon
Devotional Commentary: The dance was, in Israel, a form of divine worship, in
which the highest and holiest inspiration oftentimes expressed itself; as, for
example, in the case of Miriam and her companions at the Red Sea. If it had not been so, how would the spirit
of prophecy have said by the prophet Jeremiah, "Again I will build thee,
and thou shalt be built, O virgin of Israel: thou shalt again be adorned, and
shalt go forth in the dances of them that make merry.'" And how would the singer of the
hundred-and-fiftieth Psalm have exhorted the pious, saying to them,
"Praise ye the Lord: praise him with timbrel and dance"!
c. before
[6440 * paniym] [Strong: plural (but always as singular) of an unused noun

might, power, strength, strong.] [Gesenius: might, strength material or
physical, personal or social or political.]
1). This
is another reason I believe there was a supernatural manifestation of God’s
power in the previous verse. The impact on David was, “…he danced before the
LORD with all his might…”
2.
“…and David was girded with a linen ephod.”
a. David [1732
* David; rarely (fully); Daviyd] [Strong: from the same as 1730; loving;
David, the youngest son of Jesse:--David.]
b. was

etc.):--be able to put on, be afraid, appointed, gird, restrain, X on every

c. with a
linen [906 * bad] [Gesenius: linen, white linen] [Strong: a linen
garment:--linen.]
d. ephod
[646 * ‘ephowd] [Gesenius: ephod, priestly garment, shoulder-cape or mantle,
outer garment worn by an ordinary priest and made of white stuff worn by the
high priest – more costly, woven of gold, blue, purple, scarlet, and linen
threads provided with shoulder-pieces and a breast piece of like material,
ornamented with gems and gold.] [Strong: a girdle; specifically the ephod or
high-priest’s shoulder- piece.]
1). David
was dressed in a linen ephod, but so were all the Levites who were carrying the
Ark as well as all the singers.
a). 1
Chronicles 15:27 And David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, and all the
Levites that bare the ark, and the singers, and Chenaniah the master of the
song with the singers: David also had upon him an ephod of linen.
2). John
Wesley’s Notes: The usual habit of the priests and Levites, in their sacred
ministrations yet sometimes worn by others, as it was by the young child
Samuel; and so David, who laid by his royal robes, and put on this robe to
declare, that although he was king of Israel, yet he willingly owned himself to
be the Lord's minister and servant.
