Numbers 16:35

And there came out a fire from the LORD, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.

a. NLT: Then fire blazed forth from the LORD and burned up the 250 men who were offering incense.

1). The same Hebrew wording is used in Leviticus 10 when two of Aaron’s sons were struck dead by the LORD when they offered strange fire before the LORD.

2. “…and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.”

And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the LORD?

a. NLT: They united against Moses and Aaron and said, “You have gone too far! The whole community of Israel has been set apart by the LORD, and he is with all of us. What right do you have to act as though you are greater than the rest of the LORD’s people?”

b. NIV: They came as a group to oppose Moses and Aaron and said to them, “You have gone too far! The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the LORD is with them. Why then do you set yourselves above the LORD’s assembly?”

1). Gordon Lindsay’s Old Testament Series, Volume 11: Korah’s accusations were false, neither Moses or Aaron aspired to their positions, they were appointed by God, and since Israel was a theocracy, this act was high treason, direct rebellion against God.

a. NLT: He had hardly finished speaking the words when the ground suddenly split open beneath them.

b. NIV: As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart

c. YLT: And it cometh to pass at his finishing speaking all these words, that the ground which is under them cleaveth,

But if the Lord make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the Lord.

a. NLT: But if the LORD does something entirely new and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them and all their belongings, and they go down alive into the grave,[fn] then you will know that these men have shown contempt for the LORD.”

b. NIV: But if the LORD brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the realm of the dead, then you will know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt.”
