Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men:

a. NLT: One day Korah son of Izhar, a descendant of Kohath son of Levi, conspired with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, from the tribe of Reuben.

b. NIV: Korah son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and certain Reubenites—Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth—became insolent.

1. “Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi…”

6:17 The sons of Gershon; Libni, and Shimi, according to their families.

6:18 And the sons of Kohath; Amram, and Izhar, and Hebron, and Uzziel: and the years of the life of Kohath were an hundred thirty and three years.

6:19 And the sons of Merari; Mahali and Mushi: these are the families of Levi according to their generations.

6:20 And Amram took him Jochebed his father's sister to wife; and she bare him Aaron and Moses: and the years of the life of Amram were an hundred and thirty and seven years.

6:21 And the sons of Izhar; Korah, and Nepheg, and Zichri.

2. “…and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men:”

1). Korah was a Levite, Dathan and Abiram were Reubenites.

2). Gordon Lindsay Old Testament Series: Korah played on the Reubenites jealousies, they were not given a place of significance in the nation yet Reuben was the firstborn of Jacob…The Reubenites then used their influence to spread discontent among the other tribes. By the time Moses took note of it, it was a full-blown rebellion.

3). The fact that the tribe of Reuben was held back was because of Reuben fornicated with one of his father’s wives.

a). Genesis 49:3, 4 Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power:

49:5 Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father's bed; then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch.

4). Reuben was the first born son of Jacob and Leah. After Leah gave Jacob four sons, Rachel gave Jacob her maid Bilhah. It was Bilhah who Reuben laid with.

a). Genesis 35:21, 22  And Israel journeyed, and spread his tent beyond the tower of Edar.

35:22 And it came to pass, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine: and Israel heard it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:

b). By that act Reuben affected the future of his descendants in a bad way.
