Psalm 119:100

I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.

1. “I understand more than the ancients…”

a. [I] understand [Strong: 995 bîyn, bene; a primitive root; to separate mentally (or distinguish), i.e.(generally) understand:—attend, consider, be cunning, diligently, direct, discern, eloquent, feel, inform, instruct, have intelligence, know, look well to, mark, perceive, be prudent, regard, (can) skill(-full), teach, think, (cause, make to, get, give, have) understand(-ing), view, (deal) wise(-ly, man).]

b. [more than the] ancients [Strong: 2205 zâqên, zaw-kane'; from H2204; old:—aged, ancient (man), elder(-est), old (man, men and...women), senator.]

2. “...because I keep thy precepts.”

a. because [Strong: 3588 kiy kee a primitive particle (the full form of the prepositional prefix) indicating causal relations of all kinds, antecedent or consequent; (by implication) very widely used as a relative conjunction or adverb (as below); often largely modified by other particles annexed:--and, + (forasmuch, inasmuch, where-)as, assured(-ly), + but, certainly, doubtless, + else, even, + except, for, how, (because, in, so, than) that, + nevertheless, now, rightly, seeing, since, surely, then, therefore, + (al- )though, + till, truly, + until, when, whether, while, whom, yea, yet.]

b. [I] keep [Strong: 5341 nâtsar, naw-tsar'; a primitive root; to guard, in a good sense (to protect, maintain, obey, etc.) or a bad one (to conceal, etc.):—besieged, hidden thing, keep(-er, -ing), monument, observe, preserve(-r), subtil, watcher(-man).]

c. [thy] precepts [Strong: 6490 piqqûwd, pik-kood'; or פִּקֻּד piqqud; from H6485; properly, appointed, i.e. a mandate (of God; plural only, collectively, for the Law):—commandment, precept, statute.]

1). Keeping the precepts demonstrates walking in obedience to what the the person is meditating. Renewing the mind means I walk and obey what I am meditating.

a). Ephesians 4:20-24 But ye have not so learned Christ;

4:21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:

4:22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

4:23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

2). If we do not obey the word we are deceiving ourselves.

a). James 1:22-24 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

1:23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

1:24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
