Acts 2:13
Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.
a. ASV: But others mocking said, They are filled with new wine.
b. YLT: And others mocking said, -- 'They are full of sweet wine;'
c. Classic Amplified: But others made a joke of it and derisively said, They are simply drunk and full of sweet [intoxicating] wine.
1. “Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.”
a. [Strong: 1161 dé, deh; a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:—also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).] [The KJV translates Strong's G1161 in the following manner: but (1,237x), and (934x), now (166x), then (132x), also (18x), yet (16x), yea (13x), so (13x), moreover (13x), nevertheless (11x), for (4x), even (3x), miscellaneous (10x), not translated (300x).]
b. Others [Strong: 2087 héteros, het'-er-os; of uncertain affinity; (an-, the) other or different:—altered, else, next (day), one, (an-)other, some, strange.] [The KJV translates Strong's G2087 in the following manner: another (43x), other (42x), other thing (3x), some (2x), next day (2x), miscellaneous (7x).]
c. mocking [Strong: 5512 chleuázō, khlyoo-ad'-zo; from a derivative probably of G5491; to throw out the lip, i.e. jeer at:—mock.] [The KJV translates Strong's G5512 in the following manner: mock (2x).]
d. said [Strong: 3004 légō, leg'-o; a primary verb; properly, to "lay" forth, i.e. (figuratively) relate (in words (usually of systematic or set discourse; whereas G2036 and G5346 generally refer to an individual expression or speech respectively; while G4483 is properly to break silence merely, and G2980 means an extended or random harangue)); by implication, to mean:—ask, bid, boast, call, describe, give out, name, put forth, say(-ing, on), shew, speak, tell, utter.]
e. [Strong: 3754 hóti, hot'-ee; neuter of G3748 as conjunction; demonstrative, that (sometimes redundant); causative, because:—as concerning that, as though, because (that), for (that), how (that), (in) that, though, why.] [The KJV translates Strong's G3754 in the following manner: that (612x), for (264x), because (173x), how that (21x), how (11x), miscellaneous (212x).]
f. [these men] are [Strong: 1526 eisí, i-see'; 3rd person plural present indicative of G1510; they are:—agree, are, be, dure, × is, were.] [The KJV translates Strong's G1526 in the following manner: are (135x), be (14x), were (7x), have (2x), not translated (1x), miscellaneous (4x).
g. full [Strong: 3325 mestóō, mes-to'-o; from G3324; to replenish, i.e. (by implication) to intoxicate:—fill.] [The KJV translates Strong's G3325 in the following manner: fill (1x).]
h. [of] new wine [Strong: 1098 gleûkos, glyoo'-kos; akin to G1099; sweet wine, i.e. (properly) must (fresh juice), but used of the more saccharine (and therefore highly inebriating) fermented wine:—new wine.] [The KJV translates Strong's G1098 in the following manner: new wine (1x).]
1). After they were filled with the Holy Ghost this is what the natural eye saw and the natural ear heard: At least 15 different nationalities heard the word spoken in their own language.
a). Acts 2:6-12 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
2:7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
2:8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
2:9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
2:10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
2:11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
2:12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?
2). To many who witnessed this probably thought all that was spoken was gibberish and babbling. Not only that but the disciples appeared to be drunk, behaving as drunk people, not walking straight, falling down and others not able to stand up. Similar no doubt to what happened during the dedication of the temple by Solomon.
a). 2 Chronicles 5:13, 14 It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised the Lord, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the Lord;
5:14 So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the Lord had filled the house of God.
3). Also similar to the power of God that knocked the entire group of people to the ground, who came to arrest Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane.
a). John 18:4-6 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?
18:5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.
18:6 As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.
