Colossians 1:5
For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;

1. “For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven…”

i. heaven [Strong: 3772. ouranos oo-ran-os' perhaps from the same as 3735 (through the idea of elevation); the sky; by extension, heaven (as the abode of God); by implication, happiness, power, eternity; specially, the Gospel (Christianity):--air, heaven(-ly), sky.]
1). Many Christians have the belief that our inheritance refers mostly to what happens after we die and no doubt some of it does, for instance, we will not walk on streets of gold till we get there. Yes our inheritance is “…incorruptible, and undefiled…” it will not fade away, because it is reserved in heaven for us, but that does not mean we can’t enjoy any of it in this life. Our inheritance covers a wide range of blessings, much of which can be received here in this life by faith. A close look at what the word “salvation” includes reveals it.
a). salvation [Strong: 4991 soteria so-tay-ree'-ah feminine of a derivative of 4990 as (properly, abstract) noun; rescue or safety (physically or morally):--deliver, health, salvation, save, saving.] [Thayer: deliverance, preservation, safety, salvation.] [Scofield Reference Bible: “The Hebrew and Greek words for salvation imply the ideas of deliverance, safety, preservation, healing and soundness. Salvation is the great inclusive word of the Gospel, gathering into itself all the redemptive acts and processes…”] [Outline of Biblical Usage: deliverance, preservation, safety, salvation, deliverance from the molestation of enemies, in an ethical sense, that which concludes to the soul's safety or salvation, of Messianic salvation, salvation as the present possession of all true Christians, future salvation, the sum of benefits and blessings which the Christians, redeemed from all earthly ills, will enjoy after the visible return of Christ from heaven in the consummated and eternal kingdom of God.]
2). A closer look at another Greek word that refers to our salvation also reveals a broader meaning. The Greek word, “sozo”, which is rendered “saved” in Romans 10:9.
a). saved [Strong: 4982 sozo sode'-zo from a primary sos (contraction for obsolete saos, "safe"); to save, i.e. deliver or protect (literally or figuratively):--heal, preserve, save (self), do well, be (make) whole.] [Zodhiates: to save, deliver, make whole, preserve from danger, loss, destruction. In Matthew, Mark and Luke and John the word is used 54 times (56 times in the KJV). 20 times it is used in the rescue of the physical life from peril or death; 14 times is is used for deliverance from disease or demon possession; 20 times it is used for spiritual salvation.]
(1) Matthew 8:25 And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. [Rescue from physical death.]
(2) Matthew 9:21, 22 For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.
9:22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour. [Physical healing]
(3) Matthew 14:30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. [Deliverance from death]
(4) Luke 8:50 But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole. [Raised from death]
(5) Acts 14:8-10 And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked:
14:9 The same heard Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed,
14:10 Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked. [Physical healing]
(6) Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. [Salvation]
3). Paul was talking about this to the elders of Ephesus.
a). Acts 20:32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
b). The inheritance can be received by the word of grace being built up in us in faith, and we by faith receive and enter into it.
4). Some Christians have the mistaken belief that Israel going into the promised land is a type and foreshadow of us going to heaven, but that is not true. The fact is Israel had to whip 33 kings, 2 on the east side of Jordan and 31 on the west side of the Jordan in order to get the inheritance that God gave them (Joshua 12:1-24).
5). Israel going into the promised land is not a foreshadow of us going to heaven, rather it is a type and foreshadow of us receiving our inheritance and us by faith taking possession of it.
a). Luke 12:32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
b). Matthew 11:12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
