1). Dr. Peter Ruckman called this Scripture the “key to orthodox Christianity”. To us in 20th century American Christianity we might not think so, but in 2nd century Rome or Alexandria, where Gnosticism was rampant, it would draw the line between truth and heresy. In particular, against that form of Gnosticism called Docetism.
2). The Early Church, Henry Chadwick, pp 37, 38. “Even in those sects which stood closest to orthodox Christianity, such as the groups founded by the Egyptian Basilides and by the Platonist Valentinus of Rome, the Gnostic attitude to matter as alien to the Supreme God required the rejection of any genuine incarnation. The divine Christ (they held) might have appeared to blinded worldlings as if he were tangible flesh and blood, but those with higher insight perceived that he was pure spirit and that the physical appearance was an optical illusion and mere semblance (dokesis, whence this doctrine is labeled Docetism). It was inconceivable that the Divine Christ could have come ‘in the flesh’ in any ultimately true sense. What people would have seen if they had been there at the time would have differed according to their spiritual capacity.
3). 150 A.D. “the time when the Roman church was engaged in a life and death struggle with Marcionites and Valentinians.” (Ibid. p 64.)
4). The reading that leaves out “Christ is come in the flesh” is from Vaticanus, which comes from Rome, which was home to Valentinius.

1). In the months leading up to getting saved I was studying occult material, particularly UFO material. I was in the beginning stages of paranoid schizophrenia, which was a demonic attack. If memory serves me, I can remember reading in the material, where they wrote that Jesus did not come in the flesh. Then reading in a Christian book, UFO’s What on earth is happening by Zola Levitt and John Weldon, that this is a clear lie from the devil, revealing to me that these statements and other like them in UFO/Occultic material was straight from hell.
