Romans 1:21
Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as
God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their
foolish heart was darkened.
a. NLT: Yes,
they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks.
And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result,
their minds became dark and confused.
b. NIV: For
although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to
him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.
c. Young’s Literal Translation: because, having known God they did not glorify Him as
God, nor gave thanks, but were made vain in their reasonings, and their
unintelligent heart was darkened,
d. Amplified Bible: Because when they knew and recognized
Him as God, they did not honor and glorify Him as God or give
Him thanks. But instead they became futile and godless in
their thinking [with vain imaginings, foolish reasoning, and stupid
speculations] and their senseless minds were darkened.
e. Worrell Translation: Because
having known God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor did they give thanks;
but they became vain in their reasonings, and their senseless heart was
darkned.

j. was darkened [4654 * skotizomai][Strong:
to obscure (literally or figuratively):--darken.] Thayer: to cover with
darkness, to darken. (darkened, Eph.4:18).]
1). In Ephesians 4:17 we see the
nations walk in the “vanity of their mind”, and Romans 1:21 declares where it
probably began. Rejecting revealed truth will bring emptiness and vanity to the
imagination, to the mind.
a). 2 Kings 17:15 And they
rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made
with their fathers, and his
testimonies which he testified against them; and they
followed vanity, and became vain,
and went after the heathen that were round
about them, concerning whom the
LORD had charged them, that they should not
do like them.
3). It is possible this vanity or perhaps
veil is what is referred to in Isaiah 25:7.
a). Isaiah 25:7 And he will
destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people, and the
vail that is spread over all nations.
