Romans 1:3

Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;

a. NLT: The Good News is about his Son. In his earthly life he was born into King David’s family line,

b. NIV: Regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life was a descendant of David,

1. “Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord…”

a. Concerning [Strong: 4012 peri per-ee' from the base of 4008; properly, through (all over), i.e. around; figuratively with respect to; used in various applications, of place, cause or time (with the genitive case denoting the subject or occasion or superlative point; with the accusative case the locality, circuit, matter, circumstance or general period):--(there-)about, above, against, at, on behalf of, X and his company, which concern, (as) concerning, for, X how it will go with, ((there-, where-)) of, on, over, pertaining (to), for sake, X (e-)state, (as) touching, (where-)by (in), with. In comparative, it retains substantially the same meaning of circuit (around), excess (beyond), or completeness (through).]

b. his [Strong: 846 autos ow-tos' from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

c. Son [Strong: 5207 huios hwee-os' apparently a primary word; a "son" (sometimes of animals), used very widely of immediate, remote or figuratively, kinship:--child, foal, son.]

d. Jesus [Strong: 2424 Iesous ee-ay-sooce' of Hebrew origin (3091); Jesus (i.e. Jehoshua), the name of our Lord and two (three) other Israelites:--Jesus.]

e. Christ [Strong: 5547 Christos khris-tos' from 5548; anointed, i.e. the Messiah, an epithet of Jesus:--Christ.]

f. our [Strong: 2257 hemon hay-mone' genitive case plural of 1473; of (or from) us:--our (company), us, we.]

g. Lord [Strong: 2962 kurios koo'-ree-os from kuros (supremacy); supreme in authority, i.e. (as noun) controller; by implication, Master (as a respectful title):-- God, Lord, master, Sir.]

1). The King James translators removed “Jesus Christ our Lord” from the end of Romans 1:4 and inserted it in Romans 1:3. In doing this I believe they only threw confusion into the passage. As we can see by the six translations listed under the King James text and the Interlinear below, the phrase “Jesus Christ our Lord” does not beong in the text.

2. “…which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;”

a. which [Strong: 3588 ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]

b. was made [Strong: 1096 ginomai ghin'-om-ahee a prolongation and middle voice form of a primary verb; to cause to be ("gen"-erate), i.e. (reflexively) to become (come into being), used with great latitude (literal, figurative, intensive, etc.):--arise, be assembled, be(-come, -fall, -have self), be brought (to pass), (be) come (to pass), continue, be divided, draw, be ended, fall, be finished, follow, be found, be fulfilled, + God forbid, grow, happen, have, be kept, be made, be married, be ordained to be, partake, pass, be performed, be published, require, seem, be showed, X soon as it was, sound, be taken, be turned, use, wax, will, would, be wrought.]

c. of [Strong: 1537 . ek ek or ex ex a primary preposition denoting origin (the point whence action or motion proceeds), from, out (of place, time, or cause; literal or figurative; direct or remote):--after, among, X are, at, betwixt(-yond), by (the means of), exceedingly, (+ abundantly above), for(- th), from (among, forth, up), + grudgingly, + heartily, X heavenly, X hereby, + very highly, in, ...ly, (because, by reason) of, off (from), on, out among (from, of), over, since, X thenceforth, through, X unto, X vehemently, with(-out). d. the seed [Strong: 4690 sperma sper'-mah from 4687; something sown, i.e. seed (including the male "sperm"); by implication, offspring; specially, a remnant (figuratively, as if kept over for planting):--issue, seed.]

e. of David [Strong: 1138 Dabid dab-eed' of Hebrew origin (1732); Dabid (i.e. David), the Israelite king:--David.]

g. the flesh [Strong: 4561 sarx sarx probably from the base of 4563; flesh (as stripped of the skin), i.e. (strictly) the meat of an animal (as food), or (by extension) the body (as opposed to the soul (or spirit), or as the symbol of what is external, or as the means of kindred), or (by implication) human nature (with its frailties (physically or morally) and passions), or (specially), a human being (as such):--carnal(-ly, + -ly minded), flesh(-ly).]

1). The seed of David refers to His lineage, Matthew 1:1

2). The King James translators did an unnecessary thing regarding verses 3 & 4, why they did it I don’t know for sure. They removed a phrase from verse 4 and injected it in verse 3. The phrase, “Jesus Christ our Lord”, does not belong in verse 3. This is shown not only in the Interlinear, but also in the newer translations.

3). My view concerning the three aspects of Jesus Christ in the passage Romans 1:3, 4. text.

a). “made of the seed of David ACCORDING TO THE FLESH”: Romans 1:3.

b). “declared to be the Son of God with power, ACCORDING TO THE SPIRIT OF HOLINESS” Romans 1:4.

c). “BY [the] RESURRECTION OF [the] DEAD—Jesus Christ our Lord.”  Romans 1:4 (Interlinear).
