Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only.

1. “Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen…”

[Hoi] ὁ ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.] [Thayer: [Hoi] ὁ, ἡ, τό, originally τος, τῇ, τό (as is evident from the forms τοι, ται for οἱ, αἱ in Homer and the Ionic writings), corresponds to our definite article the (German der, die, das), which is properly a demonstrative pronoun, which we see in its full force in Homer, and of which we find certain indubitable traces also in all kinds of Greek prose, and hence also in the N. 1). This brings us back to the time period when Stephen was martyred and to the persecution that erupted because of it.


a). Acts 8:1-4  And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles. 8:2 And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him. 

8:3 As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.

2. “…travelled as far as Phenice and Cyprus, and Antioch…”


a. traveled [Strong: 1330 * dierchomai dee-er'-khom-ahee from 1223 and 2064; to traverse (literally):--come, depart, go (about, abroad, everywhere, over, through, throughout), pass (by, over, through, throughout), pierce through, travel, walk through.


b. as far as [Strong: 2193 * heos heh'-oce of uncertain affinity; a conjunction, preposition and adverb of continuance, until (of time and place):--even (until, unto), (as) far (as), how long, (un-)til(-l), (hither-, un-, up) to, while(-s).]


c. Phenice [Strong: 5403 * Phoinike foy-nee'-kay from 5404; palm-country; Phoenice (or Phoenicia), a region of Palestine:--Phenice, Phenicia.]


d. and [Strong: 2532 * kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]


e. Cyprus [Strong: 2954 * Kupros koo'-pros of uncertain origin; Cyprus, an island in the Mediterranean:--Cyprus.]


f. and [Strong: 2532 * kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]


g. Antioch [Strong: 490 * Antiocheia an-tee-okh'-i-ah from Antiochus (a Syrian king); Antiochia, a place in Syria:--Antioch.]


3. “…preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only.”


a. preaching [Strong: 2980 * laleo lal-eh'-o a prolonged form of an otherwise obsolete verb; to talk, i.e. utter words:--preach, say, speak (after), talk, tell, utter.]

[Strong: 3361. me may a primary particle of qualified negation (whereas 3756 expresses an absolute denial); (adverb) not, (conjunction) lest; also (as an interrogative implying a negative answer (whereas 3756 expects an affirmative one)) whether:--any but (that), X forbear, + God forbid, + lack, lest, neither, never, no (X wise in), none, nor, (can-)not, nothing, that not, un(-taken), without. g. [unto the] Jews [Strong: 2453 * Ioudaios ee-oo-dah'-yos from 2448 (in the sense of 2455 as a country); Judaean, i.e. belonging to Jehudah:--Jew(-ess), of Judaea.]


h. only [Strong: 3440 * monon mon'-on neuter of 3441 as adverb; merely:--alone, but, only.]


1). These missionaries preached to only Jews, not Gentiles. But we are about to see a pivotal change in the direction of the church.
