c. YLT: and having come unto Salamis, they declared the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews, and they had also John as a ministrant;

Often used in compounds, with substantially the same import; rarely with verbs of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except (elliptically) by a separate (and different) preposition.]

d. Salamis [Strong: 4529 * Salamis sal-am-ece' probably from 4535 (from the surge on the shore); Salamis, a place in Cyprus:--Salamis.]

2. “…they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews…”
a. they preached [Strong: 2605 * kataggello kat-ang-gel'-lo from 2596 and the base of 32; to proclaim, promulgate:--declare, preach, shew, speak of, teach.]

b. the word [Strong: 3056 * logos log'-os from 3004; something said (including the thought); by implication, a topic (subject of discourse), also reasoning (the mental faculty) or motive; by extension, a computation; specially, (with the article in John) the Divine Expression (i.e. Christ):--account, cause, communication, X concerning, doctrine, fame, X have to do, intent, matter, mouth, preaching, question, reason, + reckon, remove, say(-ing), shew, X speaker, speech, talk, thing, + none of these things move me, tidings, treatise, utterance, word, work.]

c. of God [Strong: 2316 * theos theh'-os of uncertain affinity; a deity, especially (with 3588) the supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very:--X exceeding, God, god(-ly, -ward).]

Often used in compounds, with substantially the same import; rarely with verbs of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except (elliptically) by a separate (and different) preposition.]

e. the synagogues [Strong: 4864 * sunagoge soon-ag-o-gay' from (the reduplicated form of) 4863; an assemblage of persons; specially, a Jewish "synagogue" (the meeting or the place); by analogy, a Christian church:--assembly, congregation, synagogue.]

1). The fact that the word “synagogues” is plural indicates a large Jewish colony at Salamis.

f. of the Jews [Strong: 2453 *  Ioudaios ee-oo-dah'-yos from 2448 (in the sense of 2455 as a country); Judaean, i.e. belonging to Jehudah:--Jew(-ess), of Judaea.]

1). The apostle Paul’s way was always minister to the Jews first and then to the Gentiles. He declared it in the book of Romans followed this formula every where in the Book of Acts.

a). Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

2). Because of the persecution that arose because of Stephen, which was ironically started by Saul, Acts 11:19; Acts 8:1, 4; there was probably already a group or groups of Jews and Gentiles ready to receive the word.

2. “…and they had also John to their minister.”

a. and [Strong: 1161 * de deh a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

c. also [Strong: 2532 * kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

d. John [Strong: 2491 * Ioannes ee-o-an'-nace of Hebrew origin (3110); Joannes (i.e. Jochanan), the name of four Israelites:--John.]

e. to their minister [Strong: 5257 * huperetes hoop-ay-ret'-ace from 5259 and a derivative of eresso (to row); an under-oarsman, i.e. (generally) subordinate (assistant, sexton, constable):--minister, officer, servant.]

1). John Mark came from Jerusalem with Barnabas and Saul when they returned to Antioch after delivering the contributions, (Acts 12:25). After Peter was freed from prison by an angel, Peter went to the house of Mary, John Marks mother, Acts 12:11, 12. In Colossians 4:10 we learn that John Mark was the nephew of Barnabas, which makes the “Mary” of Acts 11:12, Barnabas’s sister.

2). Stanley M. Horton, The Book Of Acts. “Some believe that Mark helped them as a personal servant while he trained for the ministry…similar to how Elisha ministered to Elijah.”

a). 1 Kings 19:19-21 So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him.
19:20 And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee?
19:21 And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.
