Acts 13:12


Acts 13:12

Then the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord.

a. NLT: When the governor saw what had happened, he became a believer, for he was astonished at the teaching about the Lord.

b. NIV: When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord.

c. YLT: then the proconsul having seen what hath come to pass, did believe, being astonished at the teaching of the Lord.

d. Amplified Bible Classic: Then the proconsul believed (became a Christian) when he saw what had occurred, for he was astonished and deeply touched at the teaching concerning the Lord and from Him.

e. Worrell Translation: Then the procounsul, seeing what had taken place, believed, being astonished at the teaching of the Lord.

1. “Then the deputy, when he saw what was done…”

a. Then [Strong: 5119 * tote tot'-eh from (the neuter of) 3588 and 3753; the when, i.e. at the time that (of the past or future, also in consecution):--that time, then.]

b. the deputy [Strong: 446 * anthupatos anth-oo'-pat-os from 473 and a superlative of 5228; instead of the highest officer, i.e. (specially) a Roman proconsul:--deputy.]

c. when he saw [Strong: 1492 * eido i'-do a primary verb; used only in certain past tenses, the others being borrowed from the equivalent 3700 and 3708; properly, to see (literally or figuratively); by implication, (in the perfect tense only) to know:--be aware, behold, X can (+ not tell), consider, (have) know(-ledge), look (on), perceive, see, be sure, tell, understand, wish, wot.]

d. what was done [Strong: 1096 * ginomai ghin'-om-ahee a prolongation and middle voice form of a primary verb; to cause to be ("gen"-erate), i.e. (reflexively) to become (come into being), used with great latitude (literal, figurative, intensive, etc.):--arise, be assembled, be(-come, -fall, -have self), be brought (to pass), (be) come (to pass), continue, be divided, draw, be ended, fall, be finished, follow, be found, be fulfilled, + God forbid, grow, happen, have, be kept, be made, be married, be ordained to be, partake, pass, be performed, be published, require, seem, be showed, X soon as it was, sound, be taken, be turned, use, wax, will, would, be wrought.]

2. “believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord.”

a. believed [Strong: 4100 * pisteuo pist-yoo'-o from 4102; to have faith (in, upon, or with respect to, a person or thing), i.e. credit; by implication, to entrust (especially one's spiritual well-being to Christ):--believe(-r), commit (to trust), put in trust with.]

b. being astonished [Strong: 1605 * ekplesso ek-place'-so from 1537 and 4141; to strike with astonishment:--amaze, astonish.]

c. at [Strong: 1909 * epi ep-ee' a primary preposition; properly, meaning superimposition (of time, place, order, etc.), as a relation of distribution (with the genitive case), i.e. over, upon, etc.; of rest (with the dative case) at, on, etc.; of direction (with the accusative case) towards, upon, etc.:--about (the times), above, after, against, among, as long as (touching), at, beside, X have charge of, (be-, (where-))fore, in (a place, as much as, the time of, -to), (because) of, (up-)on (behalf of), over, (by, for) the space of, through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), with. In compounds it retains essentially the same import, at, upon, etc. (literally or figuratively).]

d. the doctring [Strong: 1322 * didache did-akh-ay' from 1321; instruction (the act or the matter):--doctrine, hath been taught.]

e. of the Lord [Strong: 2962 * kurios koo'-ree-os from kuros (supremacy); supreme in authority, i.e. (as noun) controller; by implication, Master (as a respectful title):-- God, Lord, master, Sir.]

1). Within the “doctrine of the Lord” is a supernatural element. The gospel of Jesus Christ is a supernatural gospel, it is God that bears witness to it by signs and wonders, gifts of the Holy Ghost.

a). Hebrews 2:4 God also bearing [them] witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

b). Acts 14:3 Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands.

2). The deputy Sergius Paulus was won to the Lord because of the demonstration of the Spirit.

a). 1 Corinthians 2:4, 5 And my speech and my preaching [was] not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
2:5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
