Acts 20:32


And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.

1. “And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace…”


a. And [Strong: 2532. kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]


b. now [Strong: 3568. nun noon a primary particle of present time; "now" (as adverb of date, a transition or emphasis); also as noun or adjective present or immediate:--henceforth, + hereafter, of late, soon, present, this (time).]

m. grace [Strong: 5484. charin khar'-in accusative case of 5485 as preposition; through favor of, i.e. on account of:--be-(for) cause of, for sake of, +...fore, X reproachfully.]


1). The phrase “word of his grace” is used in Acts 14, in conjunction with signs and wonders and the power of God.


a). Acts 14:3 Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands.


b). Paul and Barnabas boldly preached “the word of his grace”. What was that “word”? Our answer lies in the testimony that God gave in response to that word, signs and wonders done by their hands! They were boldly preaching a gospel of salvation that included healing and miracles from the Almighty God, and God responded by giving his testimony, God testified on their behalf doing exactly what they proclaimed He would do! Halleluiah!


2. “…which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance…” 


a. which [Strong: 3588. b. [is] able [Strong: 1410. dunamai doo'-nam-ahee of uncertain affinity; to be able or possible:--be able, can (do, + -not), could, may, might, be possible, be of power.]


c. [to] build you up [Strong: 2026. epoikodomeo ep-oy-kod-om-eh'-o from 1909 and 3618; to build upon, i.e. (figuratively) to rear up:--build thereon (thereupon, on, upon).] [Zodhiates: to build upon, to erect a superstructure.]


1). There are passages that immediately come to my mind in regard to the word being able to build us up.


a). Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”


b). Faith comes by hearing faith.


2). Seeds will reproduce after its own kind. Apple seeds will produce apples, tomato seeds will produce tomatoes. This is a natural law that God set in motion at creation or probably even before creation.


a). Genesis 1:11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.


3). Likewise and more importantly, God’s word will reproduce after its own kind.


a). Isaiah 55:10, 11 For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:

55:11So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.


(1). prosper [6743 * tsalach][Strong: a primitive root; to push forward, in various senses (literal or figurative, transitive or intransitive):--break out, come (mightily), go over, be good, be meet, be profitable, (cause to, effect, make to, send) prosper(-ity, -ous, - ously).][Gesenius: to go over or through, to attack or fall upon, used of Jehovah falling upon man, to go on well, to prosper, to succeed, to make successful, to accomplish, to finish well.]  


b). God’s word will reproduce after its own kind. It will accomplish and prosper according to the purpose of why He said it. If he spoke healing, it will produce healing. If He spoke deliverance and victory, it will produce deliverance and victory. When Johnny Johnson gets up and talks about the DNA of the word, he is correct. God’s word is designed to reproduce after itself and powerful enough and sure enough to build us up in the very thing He is speaking about.


d. and [Strong: 2532. kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]


e. [to] give [Strong: 1325. didomi did'-o-mee a prolonged form of a primary verb (which is used as an alternative in most of the tenses); to give (used in a very wide application, properly, or by implication, literally or figuratively; greatly modified by the connection):--adventure, bestow, bring forth, commit, deliver (up), give, grant, hinder, make, minister, number, offer, have power, put, receive, set, shew, smite (+ with the hand), strike (+ with the palm of the hand), suffer, take, utter, yield.]


f. you [Strong: 5213. humin hoo-min' irregular dative case of 5210; to (with or by) you:--ye, you, your(-selves).]


g. [an] inheritance [Strong: 2817. kleronomia klay-ron-om-ee'-ah from 2818; heirship, i.e. (concretely) a patrimony or (genitive case) a possession:--inheritance.]


1). The word of God’s grace is not only able to build us up, but it also gives us the grace to receive our inheritance by causing us to rise up and in faith and seize it. We have an inheritance reserved for us in heaven.


a). 1 Peter 1:3-5 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

1:4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,

1:5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.


b). I used to read that passage and think, Well, my inheritance is up in heaven and I’ll get it when I get to heaven.” But that is only partially true. Yes there are blessings and experiences that are part of our inheritance that we will only experience when we get there, but the term “salvation” by definition shows that there is much of our inheritance that God intended for us to partake of in the here and now.


c). salvation [Strong: 4991 soteria, so-tay-ree'-ah; feminine of a derivative of 4990 as (properly, abstract) noun; rescue or safety (physically or morally):--deliver, health, salvation, save, saving.] [Thayer: deliverance, preservation, safety, salvation, deliverance from the molestation of enemies, in an ethical sense, that which concludes to the soul's safety or salvation, of Messianic salvation, salvation as the present possession of all true Christians, future salvation, the sum of benefits and blessings which the Christians, redeemed from all earthly ills, will enjoy after the visible return of Christ from heaven in the consummated and eternal kingdom of God.] [Scofield Reference Bible: “The Hebrew and Greek words for salvation imply the ideas of deliverance, safety, preservation, healing and soundness. 2). Generally speaking the receiving of the inheritance on our part depends on how much we allow the word of God to build us up, because it is received by faith, to him that believes.


1). Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. 


3. “…among all them which are sanctified.”


a. among [Strong: 1722. en en a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation of rest (intermediate between 1519 and 1537); "in," at, (up-)on, by, etc.:--about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as, at, before, between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (... sake of), + give self wholly to, (here-)in(-to, -wardly), X mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, X outwardly, one, X quickly, X shortly, (speedi-)ly, X that, X there(-in, -on), through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in). Often used in compounds, with substantially the same import; rarely with verbs of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except (elliptically) by a separate (and different) preposition.]

c. all [Strong: 3956. pas pas including all the forms of declension; apparently a primary word; all, any, every, the whole:--all (manner of, means), alway(-s), any (one), X daily, + ever, every (one, way), as many as, + no(-thing), X thoroughly, whatsoever, whole, whosoever.]


d. [them that are] sanctified [Strong: 37. hagiazo hag-ee-ad'-zo from 40; to make holy, i.e. (ceremonially) purify or consecrate; (mentally) to venerate:--hallow, be holy, sanctify.]


1). For the meaning of this phrase we have to turn again to Paul’s conversion experience on the road to Damascus and see what Jesus told him.


a). Acts 26:12-18 Whereupon as I went to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests,

26:13 At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me.

26:14 And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

26:15 And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest.

26:16 But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee; 

26:17 Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,

26:18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.


2). It is the will of God that we receive not only “forgiveness of sins”, but He wants us to also receive our “inheritance”. The key of course is for us to be built up by the word of his grace and receive our inheritance. One of the biggest problems in the body of Christ is too many Christians have failed to receive their inheritance. Many fail because they believe wrong because of wrong teaching,   either through erroneous
