Acts 13:9

Acts 13:9

Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him,

1. “Then Saul (who also is called Paul),

a. The Book of Acts, Stanley M. Horton. “Luke notes at this point also that Saul had another name, a Roman name, Paul. This is significant because in the rest of the book of Acts he is always called Paul. In his epistles also, he always calls himself Paul. The use of his Roman name, of course fits in with his primary ministry to the Gentiles.”

2. “…filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him,”

a. filled [4130 * pimplemi] [Zodhiates: To fill, to make full, to be wholly affected, influenced with or by something.]

1). Note source not original to me, unknown: After an initial filling that includes speaking with other tongues, it seems at these times that the Holy Ghost rises up in us, giving us a certain no doubt, full assurance of direction, a course of action and the words to say during that course of action.

b. I am reminded of Joshua 1:8 and the promised blessings given pending obedience.

1). Joshua 1:8 “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”

a). prosperous [6743 * tsaleach] [Strongs:to push forward, in various senses (literally or figuratively), to break out, come mightily, go over, be profitable, (cause to, effect, make to) prosper, (to go on well, to succeed, to make successful, to accomplish prosperously, to finish well].

b). [The Complete Word Study Dictionary of the Old Testament, Baker & Carpenter: A verb meaning to rush, to break forth, to come mightily. It describes the Holy Spirit’s effect on persons, making them powerful] Judges 14:6; 1 Samuel 16:13.

c). Judges 14:6 “And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.”

d). 1 Samuel 16:13 “Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.”

c. In light of all the above, in my mind that is exactly what the Book of Acts is referring to when it mentions whosoever “filled with the Holy Ghost”. There had already been an initial filling and the Spirit was now rising up within that individual and giving them direction.
