Isaiah 66:24

Isaiah 66:24

And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.

1. “And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me…”

a. c. [upon the] carcases [Strong: 6297 peger peh'gher; from 6296; a carcase (as limp), whether of man or beast; figuratively, an idolatrous image:--carcase, corpse, dead body.]

1). Finis Jennings Dake: All natural-flesh men on the earth will be permitted to look into eternal hell, at certain openings, and see the punishment of rebels is forever as a perpetual waning against sin and transgression. The carcases here are the bodies of men in eternal hell which will never be destroyed, bodies that will have been resurrected to immortality or deathlessness so that they may be punished for deeds  done in the body before death. 

d. [of the] men [Strong: 582 'enowsh en-oshe'; from 605; properly, a mortal (and thus differing from the more dignified 120); hence, a man in general (singly or collectively):--another, X (blood-)thirsty, certain, chap(-man); divers, fellow, X in the flower of their age, husband, (certain, mortal) man, people, person, servant, some ( X of them), + stranger, those, + their trade. It is often unexpressed in the English versions, especially when used in apposition with another word.]

e. [that have] transgressed [against me] [Strong: 6586 pasha` paw-shah'; a primitive root (identical with 6585 through the idea of expansion); to break away (from just authority), i.e. trespass, apostatize, quarrel:--offend, rebel, revolt, transgress(-ion, -or).]

2. “…for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched…”

a. for [Strong: 3588 kiy kee a primitive particle (the full form of the prepositional prefix) indicating causal relations of all kinds, antecedent or consequent; (by implication) very widely used as a relative conjunction or adverb (as below); often largely modified by other particles annexed:--and, + (forasmuch, inasmuch, where-)as, assured(-ly), + but, certainly, doubtless, + else, even, + except, for, how, (because, in, so, than) that, + nevertheless, now, rightly, seeing, since, surely, then, therefore, + (al- )though, + till, truly, + until, when, whether, while, whom, yea, yet.]

b. [their] worm [Strong: 8438 towla` to-law' and (feminine) towleoah {to-lay-aw'}; or towla ath {to-lah'-ath}; or tolaiath {to-lah'-ath}; from 3216; a maggot (as voracious); specifically (often with ellipsis of 8144) the crimson-grub, but used only (in this connection) of the color from it, and cloths dyed therewith:--crimson, scarlet, worm.]

d. die [Strong: 4191 muwth mooth; a primitive root: to die (literally or figuratively); causatively, to kill:--X at all, X crying, (be) dead (body, man, one), (put to, worthy of) death, destroy(-er), (cause to, be like to, must) die, kill, necro(-mancer), X must needs, slay, X surely, X very suddenly, X in (no) wise.]

e. neither [Strong: 3808 lo' lo or lowi {lo}; or loh (Deut. 3:11) {lo}; a primitive particle; not (the simple or abs. negation); by implication, no; often used with other particles (as follows):--X before, + or else, ere, + except, ig(-norant), much, less, nay, neither, never, no((-ne), -r, (-thing)), (X as though...,(can-), for) not (out of), of nought, otherwise, out of, + surely, + as truly as, + of a truth, + verily, for want, + whether, without.]

f. [shall their] fire [Strong: 784 'esh aysh; a primitive word; fire (literally or figuratively):-- burning, fiery, fire, flaming, hot.]

d. [be] quenched [Strong: 3518 kabah kaw-baw'; a primitive root; to expire or (causatively) to extinguish (fire, light, anger):--go (put) out, quench.]

1). The phrase in this section of the verse is referring to eternal judgment of the ungodly. There are a number of passages in Scripture that echo this truth. In particular what Jesus said. I believe that Jesus was clearly citing this verse from Isaiah 66 when speaking on resisting temptation.

a). Mark 9:43:48 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
9:44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
9:45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
9:46 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
9:47 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:
9:48 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

2). Finis Jennings Dake: This refers to all men of all ages who have died in sin and will be sent to eternal hell where their worm will not die and the fire will not be quenched )Isaiah 66:24; Mark 9:43-49). It is clear here that the carcases and the worm are in a fire which shall never be quenched. They will be an abhorring to all the flesh living on the new earth. The purpose of this opening to hell will be to cause coming generations to abhor sin and its consequences. When natural men can actually see into eternal hell it will be a great warning to them to walk in the ways of God. Not only men of the new earth but also angels also, and all other beings will be able to look into this place and see how horrible the punishment can be (Revelation 14:9-11). Horrifying as the thought may be, the view may be God’s best method of keeping eternal generations in line with His laws and commandments as they progress in the new earth-in the eternity future.

3). Here are some other passages that speak of eternal judgment.

a). Isaiah 1:28-31 And the destruction of the transgressors and of the sinners shall be together, and they that forsake the Lord shall be consumed.
1:29 For they shall be ashamed of the oaks which ye have desired, and ye shall be confounded for the gardens that ye have chosen.
1:30 For ye shall be as an oak whose leaf fadeth, and as a garden that hath no water.
1:31 And the strong shall be as tow, and the maker of it as a spark, and they shall both burn together, and none shall quench them.

b). Revelation 14:9-11 And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,
14:10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:
14:11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

3. “…and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.”

a. [and they shall] be [Strong: 1961 hayah haw-yaw a primitive root (Compare 1933); to exist, i.e. be or become, come to pass (always emphatic, and not a mere copula or auxiliary):--beacon, X altogether, be(-come), accomplished, committed, like), break, cause, come (to pass), do, faint, fall, + follow, happen, X have, last, pertain, quit (one-)self, require, X use.]

b. [an] abhorring [Strong: 1860 dra'own der-aw-one' or dera)own {day-raw-one;}; from an unused root (meaning to repulse); an object of aversion:--abhorring, contempt.]

c. [unto] all [Strong: 3605 kol kole or (Jer. 33:8) kowl {kole}; from 3634; properly, the whole; hence, all, any or every (in the singular only, but often in a plural sense):--(in) all (manner, (ye)), altogether, any (manner), enough, every (one, place, thing), howsoever, as many as, (no-)thing, ought, whatsoever, (the) whole, whoso(-ever).]

d. flesh [Strong: 1320 basar baw-sawr'; from 1319; flesh (from its freshness); by extension, body, person; also (by euphem.) the pudenda of a man:--body, (fat, lean) flesh(-ed), kin, (man-)kind, + nakedness, self, skin.]

1). One of the questions that has bothered believers is how can they be happy in heaven if they know loved ones are in hell. This is hard to answer on this side of it but I think we will be happy. For one thing we are going to know more about how our loving Father moved upon people to draw them to repentance and salvation and how they resisted. There is a passage in Ezekiel that I think may shed some light upon this truth.

a). Ezekiel 14:21-23 For thus saith the Lord GOD; How much more when I send my four sore judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the noisome beast, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast?
14:22 Yet, behold, therein shall be left a remnant that shall be brought forth, both sons and daughters: behold, they shall come forth unto you, and ye shall see their way and their doings: and ye shall be comforted concerning the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, even concerning all that I have brought upon it.
14:23 And they shall comfort you, when ye see their ways and their doings: and ye shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it, saith the Lord GOD.
