2 Corinthians 4:16

For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

a. NLT: That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day.

b. NIV: Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

c. YLT: Wherefore, we faint not, but if also our outward man doth decay, yet the inward is renewed day by day;

d. Amplified Bible Classic: Therefore we do not become discouraged (utterly spiritless, exhausted, and wearied out through fear). Though our outer man is [progressively] decaying and wasting away, yet our inner self is being [progressively] renewed day after day.

e. Worrell Translation: Wherefore, we faint not; but even if our outward man is decaying, yet our inward man is being renewed day by day.

f. Wuest Translation: Wherefore, we are not losing courage. But and if, as is the case out outward self is progressively decaying, yet the inward self is being changed into a new kind of life [fit for the new spiritual existence into which we have been ushered in salvation, and constantly being conformed to the image of the Lord Jesus] day by day.

1. “For which cause we faint not…”

a. For which cause [Strong: dio dee-o' from 1223 and 3739; through which thing, i.e. consequently:--for which cause, therefore, wherefore.]

b. [we] faint [Strong: 1573 ekkakeo ek-kak-eh'-o from 1537 and 2556; to be (bad or) weak, i.e. (by implication) to fail (in heart):--faint, be weary.]

c. not [Strong: 3756 ou oo, also (before a vowel) ouk ook, and (before an aspirate) ouch ookh a primary word; the absolute negative (compare 3361) adverb; no or not:--+ long, nay, neither, never, no (X man), none, (can-)not, + nothing, + special, un(-worthy), when, + without, + yet but.]

1). The cause of course is having Christ Jesus in us and the glorious result that occurs when we obey.

a). 2 Corinthians 4:7-15 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

4:8 We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;

4:9 Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;

4:10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.

4:11 For we which live are always delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh.

4:12 So then death worketh in us, but life in you.

4:13 We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;

4:14 Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you.

4:15 For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God.

2. “…but though our outward man perish…”

a. but [Strong: 235 alla al-lah' neuter plural of 243; properly, other things, i.e. (adverbially) contrariwise (in many relations):--and, but (even), howbeit, indeed, nay, nevertheless, no, notwithstanding, save, therefore, yea, yet.]

b. though [Strong: 1499 ei kai i kahee from 1487 and 2532; if also (or even):--if (that), though.]

c. our [Strong: 2257 hemon hay-mone' genitive case plural of 1473; of (or from) us:--our (company), us, we.]

d. outward [Strong: 1854 exo ex'-o adverb from 1537; out(-side, of doors), literally or figuratively:--away, forth, (with-)out (of, -ward), strange.]

e. man [Strong: 444 anthropos anth'-ro-pos from 435 and ops (the countenance; from 3700); man-faced, i.e. a human being:--certain, man.]

f. perish [Strong: 1311  diaphtheiro dee-af-thi'-ro from 1225 and 5351; to rot thoroughly, i.e. (by implication) to ruin (passively, decay utterly, figuratively, pervert):--corrupt, destroy, perish.]

1). The outward man of course is getting old, it ages, but the inward man, the real you and I are daily renewed by the power of the Holy Ghost.

3. “…yet the inward man is renewed day by day.”

a. yet [Strong: 235 alla al-lah' neuter plural of 243; properly, other things, i.e. (adverbially) contrariwise (in many relations):--and, but (even), howbeit, indeed, nay, nevertheless, no, notwithstanding, save, therefore, yea, yet.]

b. [the] inward [Strong: 2081 esothen es'-o-then from 2080; from inside; also used as equivalent to 2080 (inside):--inward(-ly), (from) within, without.]

c. is renewed [Strong: 341 anakainoo an-ak-ahee-no'-o from 303 and a derivative of 2537; to renovate:--renew.]

d. day [Strong: 2250 hemera hay-mer'-ah feminine (with 5610 implied) of a derivative of hemai (to sit; akin to the base of 1476) meaning tame, i.e. gentle; day, i.e. (literally) the time space between dawn and dark, or the whole 24 hours (but several days were usually reckoned by the Jews as inclusive of the parts of both extremes); figuratively, a period (always defined more or less clearly by the context):--age, + alway, (mid-)day (by day, (-ly)), + for ever, judgment, (day) time, while, years.]

e. by [Strong: 2532 kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

1). Man is a three part being (1 Thessalonians 5:23), and daily as we seek Jesus we can be renewed by the power of the Holy Ghost.

a). Ephesians 4:23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

b). Colossians 3:10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

c). Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
