Isaiah 45:20-23

Isaiah 45:20

Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, ye that are escaped of the nations: they have no knowledge that set up the wood of their graven image, and pray unto a god that cannot save.

1. “Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together…”

2. “...ye that are escaped of the nations…”

a. [ye that are] escaped [Strong: 6412 pâlîyṭ, paw-leet'; or פָּלֵיט pâlêyṭ; or פָּלֵט pâlêṭ; from H6403; a refugee:—(that have) escape(-d, -th), fugitive.]

b. [of the] nations [Strong: 1471 gôwy, go'-ee; rarely (shortened) גֹּי gôy; apparently from the same root as H1465 (in the sense of massing); a foreign nation; hence, a Gentile; also (figuratively) a troop of animals, or a flight of locusts:—Gentile, heathen, nation, people.]

1). Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown Commentary: Ultimately, those that shall be "left of all the nations which shall come against Jerusalem" are meant. They shall then all be converted to the Lord [The context is after the return of Christ].

a). Zechariah 14:16 And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.

b). Jeremiah 3:17 At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the LORD; and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem: neither shall they walk any more after the imagination of their evil heart.

c). Zechariah 8:20-22 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; It shall yet come to pass, that there shall come people, and the inhabitants of many cities:
8:21 And the inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, Let us go speedily to pray before the LORD, and to seek the LORD of hosts: I will go also.
8:22 Yea, many people and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem, and to pray before the LORD.

2). After the return of Christ the earth will be recovering from the worst wars it has ever experienced since the fall of man. The loss of life will be greater than any war since man was created. 

3. “...they have no knowledge that set up the wood of their graven image…”

a. 4. “...and pray unto a god that cannot save.”

Isaiah 45:21

Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? Who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me.

a. ASV: Declare ye, and bring it forth; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath showed this from ancient time? who hath declared it of old? have not I, Jehovah? and there is no God else besides me, a just God and a Saviour; there is none besides me.

b. YLT: Declare ye, and bring near, Yea, they take counsel together, Who hath proclaimed this from of old? From that time hath declared it? Is it not I -- Jehovah? And there is no other god besides Me, A God righteous and saving, there is none save Me.

c. Amplified Bible Classic: Declare and bring forward your strong arguments [for praying to gods that cannot save]; yes, take counsel together. Who announced this [the rise of Cyrus and his conquests] beforehand (long ago)? [What god] declared it of old? Was it not I, the Lord? And there is no other God besides Me, a rigidly and uncompromisingly just and righteous God and Savior; there is none besides Me.

d. Septuagint: If they will declare, let them draw nigh, that they may know together, who has caused these things to be heard from the beginning: then was it told you. I am God, and there is not another beside me; a just [God] and a Saviour; there is none but me.

e. Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings: Proclaim and approach; even let [your leaders] take counsel together: Who let this be heard from afore times, or related it from of old? Is it not I, HASHEM? There is no other God beside Me and no savior other than Me.

Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.

Isaiah 45:23

I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.

a. ASV: By myself have I sworn, the word is gone forth from my mouth in  righteousness, and shall not return, that unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.

b. YLT: By Myself I have sworn, Gone out from my mouth in righteousness hath a word, And it turneth not back, That to Me, bow doth every knee, every tongue swear.

c. Amplified Bible Classic: I have sworn by Myself, the word is gone out of My mouth in righteousness and shall not return, that unto Me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear [allegiance].

d. Septuagint: By myself I swear, righteousness shall surely proceed out of my mouth; my words shall not be frustrated; that to me every knee shall bend, and every tongue shall swear by God,

1. “I have sworn by myself…”

a. [By myself I have] sworn [Strong: 7650 shâbaʻ, shaw-bah'; : to seven oneself, i.e. swear (as if by repeating a declaration seven times):--adjure, charge (by an oath, with an oath), feed to the full (by mistake for 7646), take an oath, X straitly, (cause to, make to) swear.]

1). The inspired writer of Hebrews [probably Paul], uses the terminology in his book.

a). Hebrews 6:13, 14 For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could sware by no greater, he sware by himself.
Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee.

b). Arthur Pink in his commentary writes a very powerful definition and description concerning it. Exposition of Hebrews, Arthur Pink, Baker Book House, 1986, p. 341. “The assurance which was given to Abraham was the greatest that Heaven itself could afford: a promise and an oath. We say the greatest, for in v. 16, the Apostle declares that amongst men an “oath” is an end of strife; how much more when the great God Himself takes one! Moreover, observe He sware “by Himself”: He staked Himself; it was as though He had said, I will cease to be God if I do not perform this. The Lord pledged His veracity, declared the event should be as certain as His existence.”

1). There are a couple of verses from Isaiah that fit perfectly here.

a). Isaiah 55:11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereunto I send it.

b). Isaiah 14:24 The LORD of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand:

2). There is no a way for a word from God can be said with more emphasis than here, in light of what Pink writes, that by swearing by Himself, God was staking Himself, that in effect, he would cease to be God if he did not perform these words.

e. every [Strong: 3605 kol kole or (Jer. 33:8) kowl {kole}; from 3634; properly, the whole; hence, all, any or every (in the singular only, but often in a plural sense):--(in) all (manner, (ye)), altogether, any (manner), enough, every (one, place, thing), howsoever, as many as, (no-)thing, ought, whatsoever, (the) whole, whoso(-ever).]

f. tongue [Strong: 3956  lâshôwn, law-shone'; or לָשֹׁן lâshôn; also (in plural) feminine לְשֹׁנָה lᵉshônâh; from H3960; the tongue (of man or animals), used literally (as the instrument of licking, eating, or speech), and figuratively (speech, an ingot, a fork of flame, a cove of water):— babbler, bay, evil speaker, language, talker, tongue, wedge.]

g. [shall] swear [Strong: 7650 shâbaʻ, shaw-bah'; a primitive root; properly to be complete, but used only as a denominative from H7651; to seven oneself, i.e. swear (as if by repeating a declaration seven times):—adjure, charge (by an oath, with an oath), feed to the full (by mistake for H7646), take an oath, × straitly, (cause to, make to) swear.]

1). This part of the verse is quoted twice in the New Testament, and both of the references refer to Christ on a throne of judgment as God.

a). Romans 14:10-12 But why dost thou judge thy brother? Or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.
14:11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
14:12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

b). Philippians 2:8-11 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
2:11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

2). This verse is a powerful witness to the deity of Christ Jesus, that he is God manifest in the flesh.
