Isaiah 63:1-6

Isaiah 63:1

Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.

a. ASV: Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, marching in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.

b. YLT: 'Who is this coming from Edom? With dyed garments from Bozrah? This that is honourable in his clothing, Travelling in the abundance of his power?' -- 'I, speaking in righteousness, mighty to save.'

c. Classic Amplified: Who is this Who comes from Edom, with crimson-stained garments from Bozrah [in Edom]? This One Who is glorious in His apparel, striding triumphantly in the greatness of His might? It is I, [the One] Who speaks in righteousness [proclaiming vindication], mighty to save!

d. Septuagint: Who is this that is come from Edom, [with] red garments from Bosor? thus fair in his apparel, with mighty strength? I speak of righteousness and saving judgment.

1. “Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah…”

1). As we shall see the “dyed garments” are dyed with the blood the individuals he has just trampled.

g. [from] Bosrah [Strong: 1224 Botsrâh, bots-raw'; the same as H1223; Botsrah, a place in Edom:—Bozrah.

2. “...this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength…”

Isaiah 63:2

Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat?

a. ASV: Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winevat?

b. YLT: 'Wherefore is thy clothing red? And thy garments as treading in a wine fat?'

c. Classic Amplified: Why is Your apparel splashed with red, and Your garments like the one who treads in the winepress?

d. Septuagint: Wherefore are thy garments red, and thy raiment as [if fresh] from a trodden winepress?

1. “Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel…”

a. Wherefore [Strong: 4069 madduwa` mad-doo'-ah or madduaa {mad-doo'-ah}; from 4100 and the passive participle of 3045; what (is) known?; i.e. (by implication) (adverbially) why?:--how, wherefore, why.]

1). The question is being asked of how did this individual get so covered in red? You look like someone who has been treading a winefat!

2). This passage (Isaiah 63:1-6), matches almost perfectly with other passages that refer to the return of Christ in judgment. 

a). Revelation 19:11-16 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
19:12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written that no man knew, but he himself.
19:13 And he was clothed in a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called the Word of God.
19:14 And the armies which followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
19:16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

b). Revelation 14:17-20 “And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle.
14:18 And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe.
14:19 And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God.
14:20 And the winepress was troddened without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.

Jeremiah 25:30-33 Therefore prophesy thou against them all these words, and say unto them, The LORD shall roar from on high, and utter his voice from his holy habitation; he shall mightily roar upon his habitation; he shall give a shout, as they that tread the grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth.
25:31 A noise shall come even to the ends of the earth; for the LORD hath a controversy with the nations, he will plead with all flesh; he will give them that are wicked to the sword, saith the LORD.
25:32 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, evil shall go forth from nation to nation, and a great whirwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth.
And the slain of the LORD shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth: they shall not be lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung upon the ground.

d). Isaiah 59:16-19 And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him.
59:17 For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloke.
59:18 According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury to his adversaries, recompence to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompence.
59:19 So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the  sun. When the ememy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against.

e). Deuteronomy 32:41-43 If I whet my glittering sword, and mine hand take hold of judgment; I will render vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that hate me.
I will make mine arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh; and that with the blood of the slain and of the captives, from the beginning of revenges upon the enemy.
Rejoice, O ye nations, with his people: for he will avenge the blood of his servants, and will render vengeance to his adversaries, and will be merciful unto his land, and to his people.

Isaiah 63:3

I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment.

a. ASV: I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the peoples there was no man with me: yea, I trod them in mine anger, and trampled them in my wrath; and their lifeblood is sprinkled upon my garments, and I have stained all my raiment.

b. YLT: -- 'A wine-press I have trodden by myself, And of the peoples there is no one with me, And I tread them in mine anger, And I trample them in my fury, Sprinkled is their strength on my garments, And all my clothing I have polluted.

c. Classic Amplified: I have trodden the winepress alone, and of the peoples there was no one with Me. I trod them in My anger and trampled them in My wrath; and their lifeblood is sprinkled upon My garments, and I stained all My raiment.

d. Septuagint: I am full of trodden [grape], and of the nations there is not a man with me; and I trampled them in my fury, and dashed them to pieces as earth, and brought down their blood to the earth.

2. “...for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury…”

1). This verse is giving us look at the emotion behind the return of Christ. “I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and will trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment.” What is so striking about this passage is the anger and zeal with which the LORD performs His work. He stomps the grapes or people with anger and zeal so fierce, the juice or blood completely stains his garment. He is angry because of His jealousy. Zephaniah 3:8 quotes the LORD saying, “…for my determination is to gather the nations that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealously.” And He is jealous because the heathen are stealing His land. “Surely in the fire of my jealously have I spoken against the heathen, which have appropriated my land into their possession…Ezekiel 36:5.

3. “...and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment.”

a. [and their] blood [Strong: 5332 Nêtsach, nay'-tsakh; probably identical with H5331, through the idea of brilliancy of color; juice of the grape (as blood red):—blood, strength.]

e. [and I will] stain [Strong: 1351 gâʼal, gaw-al'; a primitive root, (rather identified with H1350, through the idea of freeing, i.e. repudiating); to soil or (figuratively) desecrate:—defile, pollute, stain.]

f. all [Strong: 3605 kol kole or (Jer. 33:8) kowl {kole}; from 3634; properly, the whole; hence, all, any or every (in the singular only, but often in a plural sense):--(in) all (manner, (ye)), altogether, any (manner), enough, every (one, place, thing), howsoever, as many as, (no-)thing, ought, whatsoever, (the) whole, whoso(-ever).

 Isaiah 63:4

For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come.

a. ASV: For the day of vengeance was in my heart, and the year of my redeemed is come.

b. YLT: For the day of vengeance is in my heart, And the year of my redeemed hath come.

c. Classic Amplified: For the day of vengeance was in My heart, and My year of redemption [the year of My redeemed] has come.

d. Septuagint: For the day of recompence has come upon them, and the year of redemption is at hand.

1. “For the day of vengeance is in mine heart…”

a. 1). When Jesus was reading out of Isaiah 61:1-3 in the synagogue in Nazareth, he stopped in the middle of the passage. In our English Bible he stopped at a comma in the middle of the sentence.

a). Luke 4:16-20  And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
4:17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
4:19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
4:20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

2). Here is the full passage. Jesus stopped right after he said, “To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” The verse goes on to say, “...and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn.”

a). Isaiah 61:1-3 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
61:2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
61:3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.

3). The day of vengeance is the return of Christ to this earth in judgment to destroy his enemies and set up his Kingdom.

a). Deuteronomy 32:41-43 If I whet my glittering sword, and mine hand take hold of judgment; I will render vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that hate me.
32:42 I will make mine arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh; and that with the blood of the slain and of the captives, from the beginning of revenges upon the enemy.
32:43 Rejoice, O ye nations, with his people: for he will avenge the blood of his servants, and will render vengeance to his adversaries, and will be merciful unto his land, and to his people.

b). Revelation 19:11-16 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
19:12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written that no man knew, but he himself.
19:13 And he was clothed in a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called the Word of God.
19:14 And the armies which followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
19:16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

b). Revelation 14:17-20 “And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle.
14:18 And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe.
14:19 And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God.
14:20 And the winepress was troddened without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.

Jeremiah 25:30-33 Therefore prophesy thou against them all these words, and say unto them, The LORD shall roar from on high, and utter his voice from his holy habitation; he shall mightily roar upon his habitation; he shall give a shout, as they that tread the grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth.
25:31 A noise shall come even to the ends of the earth; for the LORD hath a controversy with the nations, he will plead with all flesh; he will give them that are wicked to the sword, saith the LORD.
25:32 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, evil shall go forth from nation to nation, and a great whirwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth.
And the slain of the LORD shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth: they shall not be lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung upon the ground.

d). Isaiah 59:16-19 And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him.
59:17 For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloke.
59:18 According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury to his adversaries, recompence to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompence.
59:19 So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the  sun. When the ememy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against.

Isaiah 63:5

And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my fury, it upheld me.
