Isaiah 60:18
Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise.
a. ASV: Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, desolation nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise.
b. YLT: Violence is not heard any more in thy land, Spoiling and destruction in thy borders, And thou hast called 'Salvation' thy walls, And thy gates, 'Praise.'
d. Amplified Bible Classic: Violence shall no more be heard in your land, nor devastation or destruction within your borders, but you shall call your walls Salvation and your gates Praise.
e. Septuagint: And injustice shall no more be heard in thy land, nor destruction nor misery in thy coasts; but thy walls shall be called Salvation, and thy gates Sculptured Work.
f. Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings: No longer will violence be heard of in your land, not plunder and calamity in your borders. You will call [God’s] salvation your protective walls, and [His] praise to be your gateways.
1. “Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders…”
a. Violence [Strong: 2555 châmâç, khaw-mawce'; from H2554; violence; by implication, wrong; by metonymy unjust gain:—cruel(-ty), damage, false, injustice, × oppressor, unrighteous, violence (against, done), violent (dealing), wrong.]
b. [shall] no [Strong: 3808 lo' lo or lowi {lo}; or loh (Deut. 3:11) {lo}; a primitive particle; not (the simple or abs. negation); by implication, no; often used with other particles (as follows):--X before, + or else, ere, + except, ig(-norant), much, less, nay, neither, never, no((-ne), -r, (-thing)), (X as though...,(can-), for) not (out of), of nought, otherwise, out of, + surely, + as truly as, + of a truth, + verily, for want, + whether, without.]
c. more [Strong: 5750 `owd ode or rod {ode}; from 5749; properly, iteration or continuance; used only adverbially (with or without preposition), again, repeatedly, still, more:--again, X all life long, at all, besides, but, else, further(-more), henceforth, (any) longer, (any) more(-over), X once, since, (be) still, when, (good, the) while (having being), (as, because, whether, while) yet (within).]
d. [be] heard [Strong: 8085 shâmaʻ, shaw-mah'; a primitive root; to hear intelligently (often with implication of attention, obedience, etc.; causatively, to tell, etc.):—× attentively, call (gather) together, × carefully, × certainly, consent, consider, be content, declare, × diligently, discern, give ear, (cause to, let, make to) hear(-ken, tell), × indeed, listen, make (a) noise, (be) obedient, obey, perceive, (make a) proclaim(-ation), publish, regard, report, shew (forth), (make a) sound, × surely, tell, understand, whosoever (heareth), witness.]
e. [in thy] land [Strong: 776 ʼerets, eh'-rets; from an unused root probably meaning to be firm; the earth (at large, or partitively a land):—× common, country, earth, field, ground, land, × natins, way, + wilderness, world.]
f. wasting [Strong: 7701 shôd, shode; or שׁוֹד shôwd; (Job 5:21), from H7736; violence, ravage:—desolation, destruction, oppression, robbery, spoil(-ed, -er, -ing), wasting.]
g. [nor] destruction [Strong: 7667 sheber, sheh'-ber; or שֵׁבֶר shêber; from H7665; a fracture, figuratively, ruin; specifically, a solution (of a dream):—affliction, breach, breaking, broken(-footed, -handed), bruise, crashing, destruction, hurt, interpretation, vexation.]
h. [within thy] borders [Strong: 1366 gᵉbûwl, gheb-ool'; or גְּבֻל gᵉbul; (shortened) from H1379; properly, a cord (as twisted), i.e. (by implication) a boundary; by extension the territory inclosed:—border, bound, coast, × great, landmark, limit, quarter, space.]
2. “...but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise.”
a. [but thou shalt] call [Strong: 7121 qârâʼ, kaw-raw'; a primitive root (rather identical with H7122 through the idea of accosting a person met); to call out to (i.e. properly, address by name, but used in a wide variety of applications):—bewray (self), that are bidden, call (for, forth, self, upon), cry (unto), (be) famous, guest, invite, mention, (give) name, preach, (make) proclaim(-ation), pronounce, publish, read, renowned, say.]
b. [your] walls [Strong: 2346 chôwmâh, kho-maw'; feminine active participle of an unused root apparently meaning to join; a wall of protection:—wall, walled.]
c. Salvation [Strong: 3444 yᵉshûwʻâh, yesh-oo'-aw; feminine passive participle of H3467; something saved, i.e. (abstractly) deliverance; hence, aid, victory, prosperity:—deliverance, health, help(-ing), salvation, save, saving (health), welfare.]
d. [and thy] gates [Strong: 8179 shaʻar, shah'-ar; from H8176 in its original sense; an opening, i.e. door or gate:—city, door, gate, port (× -er).]
e. Praise [Strong: 8416 tᵉhillâh, teh-hil-law'; from H1984; laudation; specifically (concretely) a hymn:—praise.]
1). I love the Jewish Translation of this verse. The emphasis and dependability is on the salvation of God, not on the walls or gates. He is their protection not the physical walls or gates.
a). Isaiah 60:18 [Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings]: No longer will violence be heard of in your land, not plunder and calamity in your borders. You will call [God’s] salvation your protective walls, and [His] praise to be your gateways.
