Jeremiah 5:8

Jeremiah 5:8

They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour's wife.

a. ASV: They were as fed horses roaming at large; every one neighed after his neighbor’s wife.

b. YLT: Fed horses -- they have been early risers, Each to the wife of his neighbour they neigh.

c. Classic Amplified: They were like fed stallions roaming at large; each one neighed after his neighbor’s wife.

d. Septuagint: They were like fed stallions roaming at large; each one neighed after his neighbor’s wife.

e. Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/ Writings: They were like well-fed horses rising early, each man neighing to the wife of his acquaintance.

1. “They were as fed horses in the morning…”

a. [They] were [Strong: 1961 hayah haw-yaw a primitive root (Compare 1933); to exist, i.e. be or become, come to pass (always emphatic, and not a mere copula or auxiliary):--beacon, X altogether, be(-come), accomplished, committed, like), break, cause, come (to pass), do, faint, fall, + follow, happen, X have, last, pertain, quit (one-)self, require, X use.]

b. [as] fed [Strong: 2109 zûwn, zoon; a primitive root; perhaps properly, to be plump, i.e. (transitively) to nourish:—feed.]

c. horses [Strong: 5483 çûwç, soos; or סֻס çuç; from an unused root meaning to skip (properly, for joy); a horse (as leaping); also a swallow (from its rapid flight):—crane, horse (-back, -hoof)]

d. [in the] morning [Strong: 7904 shâkâh, shaw-kaw'; a primitive root; to roam (through lust):—in the morning (by mistake for H7925).]

1). Fed the night before by visiting the whore houses?

 2. “...every one neighed after his neighbour's wife.”

a. everyone [Strong: 376 ʼîysh, eesh; contracted for H582 (or perhaps rather from an unused root meaning to be extant); a man as an individual or a male person; often used as an adjunct to a more definite term (and in such cases frequently not expressed in translation):—also, another, any (man), a certain, champion, consent, each, every (one), fellow, (foot-, husband-) man, (good-, great, mighty) man, he, high (degree), him (that is), husband, man(-kind), none, one, people, person, steward, what (man) soever, whoso(-ever), worthy.]

b. neighed [Strong: 6670 tsâhal, tsaw-hal'; a primitive root; to gleam, i.e. (figuratively) be cheerful; by transference to sound clear (of various animal or human expressions):—bellow, cry aloud (out), lift up, neigh, rejoice, make to shine, shout.]

c. after [Strong: 413 'el ale (but only used in the shortened constructive form sel {el}); a primitive particle; properly, denoting motion towards, but occasionally used of a quiescent position, i.e. near, with or among; often in general, to:--about, according to ,after, against, among, as for, at, because(-fore, -side), both...and, by, concerning, for, from, X hath, in(- to), near, (out) of, over, through, to(-ward), under, unto, upon, whether, with(-in).]

d. [his] neighbor’s [Strong: 7453 rêaʻ, ray'-ah; or רֵיעַ rêyaʻ; from H7462; an associate (more or less close):—brother, companion, fellow, friend, husband, lover, neighbour, × (an-) other.]

e. wife [Strong: 802 ʼishshâh, ish-shaw'; feminine of H376 or H582; irregular plural, נָשִׁים nâshîym;(used in the same wide sense as H582) a woman:—(adulter) ess, each, every, female, × many, none, one, together, wife, woman. Often unexpressed in English.]

1). 2 Peter 2:13, 14 And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you;
2:14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:

a). “…an heart they have exercised with covetous practices…”

(1) exercised [1128 * gymnazo][Thayer: to exercise naked (in a palaestra or school of athletics), to exercise vigorously, in any way, either the body or the mind.]

(2) covetous practices [4124 * pleonexia][Thayer:  greedy desire to have more, covetousness, avarice.][Strong: avarice, i.e. (by implication) fraudulency, extortion:--covetous(-ness) practices, greediness.]

(3) They exercised their hearts with covetous practices, to do that would be to think and meditate upon the flesh and then to act it out.

(a) Ephesians 2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

(b) These individuals filled their thoughts and desires with sinful practices and they then acted them out, fulfilled them in their lives. This underscores the critical importance of not only meditating the Scriptures but also what do we allow into our minds, what are we feeding on. What music do we listen to, what movies and television do we watch? What do we feed on?
