And he took Agag king of the Amalekites alive, though he utterly destroyed all the rest of the people with the sword., and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.

1. “And he took Agag king of the Amalekites alive…”

b. [Strong: 853 'eth ayth apparent contracted from 226 in the demonstrative sense of entity; properly, self (but generally used to point out more definitely the object of a verb or preposition, even or namely):--(as such unrepresented in English).]

c. Agag [Strong: 90 'Agag ag-ag' or uAgag {Ag-awg'}; of uncertain derivation (Compare 89); flame; Agag, a title of Amalekitish kings:--Agag.]

d. king [Strong: 4428 melek meh'-lek from 4427; a king:--king, royal.]

1). This was direct disobedience to the word of the LORD. 

a). 1 Samuel 15:2, 3 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.

15:3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

2. “...though he utterly destroyed all the rest of the people with the sword.”

c. [of the] people [Strong: 5971 `am am from 6004; a people (as a congregated unit); specifically, a tribe (as those of Israel); hence (collectively) troops or attendants; figuratively, a flock:--folk, men, nation, people.]

d.
