Acts 28:28


Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and they will hear it.

1. “Be it known therefore unto you…”

h. Gentiles [Strong: 1484. ethnos eth'-nos probably from 1486; a race (as of the same habit), i.e. a tribe; specially, a foreign (non-Jewish) one (usually, by implication, pagan):--Gentile, heathen, nation, people.]

j. [that they will] hear [Strong: 191. akouo ak-oo'-o a primary verb; to hear (in various senses):--give (in the) audience (of), come (to the ears), (shall) hear(-er, -ken), be noised, be reported, understand.] 


k. it [Strong: 846. autos ow-tos' from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.] 


1). The prophecies in the Old Testament concerning the inclusion of the Gentiles in the salvation of God are numerous. One of my favorites is Jeremiah.


a). Jeremiah 16:19-21 O LORD, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit.

16:20 Shall a man make gods unto himself, and they are no gods?

16:21 Therefore, behold, I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know mine hand and my might; and they shall know that my name is The LORD.


2). The Apostle Paul in Romans 15 lists four Old Testament passages that confirm God’s intention of including the Gentiles in salvation.


a). Romans 15:8, 9 Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers:

15:9 And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name.


(1) This first quote is from 2 Samuel.


(2) 2 Samuel 22:50 Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name.


b). Romans 15:10 And again he saith, Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people. 


(1) The second quote is from Deuteronomy.


(2) Deuteronomy 32:43 Rejoice, O ye nations, with his people: for he will avenge the blood of his servants, and will render vengeance to his adversaries, and will be merciful unto his land, and to his people.


c). Romans 15:11 And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people.


(1) The third is from Psalms.


(2) Psalm 117:1 O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.


d). Romans 15:12 And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust.


(1) The fourth is from Isaiah.

(2) Isaiah 11:10 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:


3). Not included here in this list but cited elsewhere in Romans by Paul is the warning given to Moses. 


a). Deuteronomy 32:21 They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.


b). Romans 10:19 But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.


4). It was literally fulfilled more than once in the book of Acts during Paul’s ministry.


a). Acts 13:42-52 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.

13:43 Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.

13:44 And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.

13:45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming.

13:46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.

13:47 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.

13:48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.

13:49 And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region.

13:50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts.

13:51 But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium.

13:52 And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, give audience.

1). Paul directed his preaching to the two groups that would be here, first the Jews, the men of Israel.

2. “…and ye that fear God, give audience.”

Jewish New Testament Commentary, David Stearn: “A God fearer…is regarded by many scholars as a technical term for  describing a Gentile who attached himself to Judaism but chose not to undergo formal conversion, which included circumcision and public (proselyte baptism). This class of Gentiles, known in Judaism as “proselytes of the gate”, was quite large at this time. They were attracted to the nobility of Jewish worship and the truth of the one God who had revealed himself in the Bible, but for various reasons did not become Jews.”

Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work at work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you.

a. NLT: ‘Look, you mockers, be amazed and die! For I am doing something in your own day,
something you wouldn’t believe even if someone told you about it


b. NIV: “ ‘Look, you scoffers, wonder and perish, for I am going to do something in your days that you would never believe, even if someone told you.


c. YLT: See, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish, because a work I -- I do work in your days, a work in which ye may not believe, though any one may declare it to you.'


d. Amplified Bible Classic: Look, you scoffers and scorners, and marvel and perish and vanish away; for I am doing a deed in your days, a deed which you will never have confidence in or believe, [even] if someone [clearly describing it in detail] declares it to you.

l. a man [Strong: 5100 tis tis an enclitic indefinite pronoun; some or any person or object:--a (kind of), any (man, thing, thing at all), certain (thing), divers, he (every) man, one (X thing), ought, + partly, some (man, -body, - thing, -what), (+ that no-)thing, what(-soever), X wherewith, whom(-soever), whose(-soever).]

m. declare it [Strong: 1555 ekdiegeomai ek-dee-ayg-eh'-om-ahee from 1537 and a compound of 1223 and 2233; to narrate through wholly:--declare.]

n. unto you [Strong: 5213 humin hoo-min' irregular dative case of 5210; to (with or by) you:--ye, you, your(-selves).]

1). This is a quote from Habakkuk 1:5 but looking at the two versions, it is clear paul is quoting from the Septuagint.

a). Habakkuk 1:5 Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvellously: for I will work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be told you.

b). Habakkuk 1:5 [Septuagint] “Behold, ye dispisers, and look, and wonder marvelously, and vanish: for I work a work in your days, which ye will in no wise believe, though a man declare it to you.”

2). COMMENTARY on the NEW TESTAMENT Use of the OLD TESTAMENT, G. K. Beale and D. A. Carson, Editors, p587. “The citation is from Habakkuk 1:5, which in the MT [Masoretic Text] says, “Look at the nations, and see! For a work is being done in your days—you will not believe it when you are told.” The LXX is essentially the same, but a slight variation in the text has produced “you scoffers” instead of “at the nations.”

3). The Acts of the Apostles, Robert E. Tourville: “The work of Habakkuk’s day was that God allowed the Babylonians to bring judgment on them for their sins. Jew, however, did not believe God would do this, thus Habakkuk’s warning…The judgment of the Jews prophesied by Habakkuk took place in 586 B.C. with the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple with deportation of the people.”

4). The Apostle Paul was warning the Jews here in Psidian Antioch not to disbelieve the work that God declares he is working, i.e., not only raising Jesus from the dead, but also granting salvation to the Gentiles. The Prophets foretold of this many times in the Scriptures.

a). Jeremiah 16:19-21 O Lord, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit.
16:20 Shall a man make gods unto himself, and they are no gods?
16:21 Therefore, behold, I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know mine hand and my might; and they shall know that my name is The Lord.

5). At the end of the book of Acts the Apostle Paul warned the Jewish leaders that the Gentiles would accept this message but warned them that the reason they did not was because of their hard hearts.

a). Acts 28:23-29 And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.
28:24 And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.
28:25 And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,
28:26 Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive:
28:27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
28:28 Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.
28:29 And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves.
