Acts 13:16

Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, give audience.

a. NLT: So Paul stood, lifted his hand to quiet them, and started speaking. “Men of Israel,” he said, “and you God-fearing Gentiles, listen to me.

b. NIV: Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand and said: “Fellow Israelites and you Gentiles who worship God, listen to me!

c. YLT: And Paul having risen, and having beckoned with the hand, said, 'Men, Israelites, and those fearing God, hearken:

d. Amplified Bible Classic: So Paul arose, and motioning with his hand said, Men of Israel and you who reverence and fear God, listen!

1. “Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel…”

a. Then [Strong: 1161 * de deh a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

b. Paul [Strong: 3972 * Paulos pow'-los of Latin origin; (little; but remotely from a derivative of 3973, meaning the same); Paulus, the name of a Roman and of an apostle:--Paul, Paulus.]

c. stood up [Strong: anistemi an-is'-tay-mee from 303 and 2476; to stand up (literal or figurative, transitive or intransitive):--arise, lift up, raise up (again), rise (again), stand up(-right).]

d. and [Strong: 2532 * kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

e. beckoning [Strong: 2678 * kataseio kat-as-i'-o from 2596 and 4579; to sway downward, i.e. make a signal:--beckon.]

f. with the hand [Strong: 5495 * cheir khire perhaps from the base of 5494 in the sense of its congener the base of 5490 (through the idea of hollowness for grasping); the hand (literally or figuratively (power); especially (by Hebraism) a means or instrument):--hand.

g. said [Strong: 2076 * epo ep'-o a primary verb (used only in the definite past tense, the others being borrowed from 2046, 4483, and 5346); to speak or say (by word or writing):--answer, bid, bring word, call, command, grant, say (on), speak, tell.]

h. Men [Strong: 435 * aner an'-ayr a primary word (compare 444); a man (properly as an individual male):--fellow, husband, man, sir.

i. of Israel [Strong: 2475 * Israelites is-rah-ale-ee'-tace from 2474; an "Israelite", i.e. descendant of Israel (literally or figuratively):--Israelite.]

1). Paul directed his preaching to the two groups that would be here, first the Jews, the men of Israel.

2. “…and ye that fear God, give audience.”

a. and [Strong: 2532 * kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. ye [Strong: 3588 * ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]

c. that fear [Strong: 5399 * phobeo fob-eh'-o from 5401; to frighten, i.e. (passively) to be alarmed; by analogy, to be in awe of, i.e. revere:--be (+ sore) afraid, fear (exceedingly), reverence.]

d. God [Strong: 2316 * theos theh'-os of uncertain affinity; a deity, especially (with 3588) the supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very:--X exceeding, God, god(-ly, -ward).]

Jewish New Testament Commentary, David Stearn: “A God fearer…is regarded by many scholars as a technical term for  describing a Gentile who attached himself to Judaism but chose not to undergo formal conversion, which included circumcision and public (proselyte baptism). This class of Gentiles, known in Judaism as “proselytes of the gate”, was quite large at this time. They were attracted to the nobility of Jewish worship and the truth of the one God who had revealed himself in the Bible, but for various reasons did not become Jews.”

e. give audience [Strong: 191 * akouo ak-oo'-o a primary verb; to hear (in various senses):--give (in the) audience (of), come (to the ears), (shall) hear(-er, -ken), be noised, be reported, understand.
