Philippians 3:17

Philippians 3:17

Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.

a. NLT: Dear brothers and sisters, pattern your lives after mine, and learn from those who follow our example.

b. NIV: Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do.

c. YLT: Become followers together of me, brethren, and observe those thus walking, according as ye have us -- a pattern;

d. Amplified Bible Classic: Brethren, together follow my example and observe those who live after the pattern we have set for you.

e. Worrell Translation: Brethren, become imatators together of me, and mark those who so walk, as ye have us as an example.

f. Wuest Translation: Become imatators of me, brethren, and observe attentively those who conduct themselves in a manner which reflects the example which you have in us.

1. “Brethren, be followers together of me…”

a. Brethren [Strong: 80 adephos ad-el-fos' from 1 (as a connective particle) and delphus (the womb); a brother (literally or figuratively) near or remote (much like 1):--brother.]

b. be [Strong: 80 ginomai ghin'-om-ahee a prolongation and middle voice form of a primary verb; to cause to be ("gen"-erate), i.e. (reflexively) to become (come into being), used with great latitude (literal, figurative, intensive, etc.):--arise, be assembled, be(-come, -fall, -have self), be brought (to pass), (be) come (to pass), continue, be divided, draw, be ended, fall, be finished, follow, be found, be fulfilled, + God forbid, grow, happen, have, be kept, be made, be married, be ordained to be, partake, pass, be performed, be published, require, seem, be showed, X soon as it was, sound, be taken, be turned, use, wax, will, would, be wrought.]

c. followers together [Strong: 4831 summimetes soom-mim-ay-tace' from a presumed compound of 4862 and 3401; a co-imitator, i.e. fellow votary:--follower together.]

d. of me [Strong: 3450 mou moo the simpler form of 1700; of me:--I, me, mine (own), my.] [summimetes; sun-with; mimetes-an imitator] [Vine: a follower, a fellow imitator.]

2. “…and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.”

a. and [Strong: 2532 kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. mark [Strong: 4648 skopeo skop-eh'-o from 4649; to take aim at (spy), i.e. (figuratively) regard:--consider, take heed, look at (on), mark.] [Vine: to look at, behold, watch, contemplate, is used metaphorically of looking to…used in Romans 16:17 of a warning against those who cause divisions. In Philippians 3:17, of observing those who walked after the example of Paul so as to follow their ways.]

c. [them] wich walk 4043 peripateo per-ee-pat-eh'-o from 4012 and 3961; to tread all around, i.e. walk at large (especially as proof of ability); figuratively, to live, deport oneself, follow (as a companion or votary):--go, be occupied with, walk (about).]

d. so [Strong: 3779 houto hoo'-to, or (before a vowel houtos hoo'-toce adverb from 3778; in this way (referring to what precedes or follows):--after that, after (in) this manner, as, even (so), for all that, like(-wise), no more, on this fashion(-wise), so (in like manner), thus, what.]

e. as [Strong: 2531 kathos kath-oce' from 2596 and 5613; just (or inasmuch) as, that:--according to, (according, even) as, how, when.]

f. ye have [Strong: 2192 echo ekh'-o, including an alternate form scheo skheh'-o; (used in certain tenses only) a primary verb; to hold (used in very various applications, literally or figuratively, direct or remote; such as possession; ability, contiuity, relation, or condition):--be (able, X hold, possessed with), accompany, + begin to amend, can(+ -not), X conceive, count, diseased, do + eat, + enjoy, + fear, following, have, hold, keep, + lack, + go to law, lie, + must needs, + of necessity, + need, next, + recover, + reign, + rest, + return, X sick, take for, + tremble, + uncircumcised, use.]

g. us [Strong: 2248 hemas hay-mas' accusative case plural of 1473; us:--our, us, we.]

h. [for an] ensample [5179   tupos too'-pos from 5180; a die (as struck), i.e. (by implication) a stamp or scar; by analogy, a shape, i.e. a statue, (figuratively) style or resemblance; specially, a sampler ("type"), i.e. a model (for imitation) or instance (for warning):--en-(ex-)ample, fashion, figure, form, manner, pattern, print.] [Zodhiates: a type, i.e., something caused by strikes or blows. Figuratively an example, a pattern to be imitated.]

1). We are to be imitators first of Christ but also of anyone whose godly life is an example, pointing us to Christ.

a). 1 Peter 2:21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

b). Hebrews 6:12 That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

c). Psalm 37:37 Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.

2). The Greek word skopeo is the strongest word among several for identifying someone or something. It has the sense of intense observation. In the secular literature, it is sometimes used for a spy.
