1 Corinthians 14:2

1 Corinthians 14:2
For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
a. In this chapter Paul is addressing the misuse of the gift of “divers kinds of tongues” with in the body of Christ. He clearly distinguishes between an individual praying in tongues for his own edification and speaking in tongues in a church service, along with the appropriate and necessary interpretation for the edification of the church. Most people miss that and because they miss it, it causes a lot of misunderstanding, which leads to a lot of wrong teaching, which leads to a lot of wrong believing within the church.
1. “For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God…”
a. The word “unknown” is not in the Greek text which is why it is in italics. Christians who don’t believe in the baptism of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking with other tongues constantly bring that up. But, if someone is speaking in a “tongue” or language that no man understands, hey, that is an unknown tongue. The word “unknown” is in there because the translators believed the context required it, and frankly, I agree with them.
b. In this context, the individual is speaking an unknown language not to men, but to God.
2. “…for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
a. understandeth [191 * akouo] [Zodhiates: To hear with attention, hearken or listen to, to understand, to hear with the ear of the mind.]

b. mysteries [3466 * musterion] [Zodhiates: Some sacred thing hidden or secret which is naturally unknown to human reason and only known by the revelation of God.]
[Thayer: a hidden or secret thing, not obvious to the understanding; a hidden purpose or counsel; secret will; it denotes the mystic or hidden sense.]

c. In this section he writes that while this person is speaking in this unknown language to God, no human understands what this person is saying. He goes on to say this person is speaking mysteries to God.
