1 Corinthians 2:6

1 Corinthians 2:6

Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:

a. NLT: Yet when I am among mature believers, I do speak with words of wisdom, but not the kind of wisdom that belongs to this world or to the rulers of this world, who are soon forgotten.

b. NIV: We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.

c. YLT: And wisdom we speak among the perfect, and wisdom not of this age, nor of the rulers of this age -- of those becoming useless,

d. Amplified Bible: Yet we do speak wisdom among those spiritually mature [believers who have teachable hearts and a greater understanding]; but [it is a higher] wisdom not [the wisdom] of this present age nor of the rulers and leaders of this age, who are passing away;

e. Worrell Translation: But we speak wisdom among the perfect; yet a wisdom not of this world, nor of the rulers of this world, who are coming to naught;

1. “Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect…”

a. Howbeit [1161 * de] [Strong: a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

b. we speak [2980 * laleo] [Strong:  a prolonged form of an otherwise obsolete verb; to talk, i.e. utter words:--preach, say, speak (after), talk, tell, utter.]

c. wisdom [4678 * Sophia] [Strong: from 4680; wisdom (higher or lower, worldly or spiritual):--wisdom.]

d. among [1722 * en] [Strong: a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation of rest (intermediate between 1519 and 1537); "in," at, (up-)on, by, etc.:--about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as, at, before, between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (... sake of), + give self wholly to, (here-)in(-to, -wardly), X mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, X outwardly, one, X quickly, X shortly, (speedi-)ly, X that, X there(-in, -on), through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in). Often used in compounds, with substantially the same import; rarely with verbs of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except (elliptically) by a separate (and different) preposition.]

e. them that are perfect [5046 * teleios] [Strong: from 5056; complete (in various applications of labor, growth, mental and moral character, etc.); neuter (as noun, with 3588) completeness:--of full age, man, perfect.]

2. “…yet not the wisdom of this world…”

a. yet [1161 * de] [Strong: a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

b. not [3756 *  ou also (before a vowel) ouk and ouch] ]Strong: a primary word; the absolute negative (compare 3361) adverb; no or not:--+ long, nay, neither, never, no (X man), none, (can-)not, + nothing, + special, un(-worthy), when, + without, + yet but.]

c. the wisdom [4678 * Sophia] [Strong: from 4680; wisdom (higher or lower, worldly or spiritual):--wisdom.]

d. of this [5127 * toutou] [Strong: genitive case singular masculine or neuter of 3778; of (from or concerning) this (person or thing):--here(-by), him, it, + such manner of, that, thence(-forth), thereabout, this, thus.]

e. world [165 * aion] [Strong: from the same as 104; properly, an age; by extension, perpetuity (also past); by implication, the world; specially (Jewish) a Messianic period (present or future):--age, course, eternal, (for) ever(-more), (n-)ever, (beginning of the , while the) world (began, without end).]

1). The wisdom of this world is foolishness with God, because the world by its wisdom knows not God. It does not recognize him.

a). 1 Corinthians 2:18-21 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
2:19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.
2:20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?
2:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

2). The canal minds thinking is enmity or an enemy of God.

a). Romans 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

3. “…nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:”

a. nor [3761 * oude] [Strong: from 3756 and 1161; not however, i.e. neither, nor, not even:--neither (indeed), never, no (more, nor, not), nor (yet), (also, even, then) not (even, so much as), + nothing, so much as.]

b. of the princes [758 * archon] [Strong: present participle of 757; a first (in rank or power):--chief (ruler), magistrate, prince, ruler.]

c. of this [5127 * toutou] [Strong: genitive case singular masculine or neuter of 3778; of (from or concerning) this (person or thing):--here(-by), him, it, + such manner of, that, thence(-forth), thereabout, this, thus.]

d. world [165 * aion] [Strong: from the same as 104; properly, an age; by extension, perpetuity (also past); by implication, the world; specially (Jewish) a Messianic period (present or future):--age, course, eternal, (for) ever(-more), (n-)ever, (beginning of the , while the) world (began, without end).]

1). The princes of this world are angelic powers, good and bad.

a). Daniel 10:20, 21Then said he, Knowest thou wherefore I come unto thee? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia shall come.
10:21 But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.

2). It declares here that the wisdom of the princes of this world, the bad ones, come to nought. The church has wisdom that was hidden from all the angelic princes, that particular wisdom was designed by God to be shown to the princes through the church.

a). Ephesians 3:9, 10  And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:
To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,

3). As we shall see later in this chapter, 1 Corinthians 2, the wisdom included crucifying Christ Jesus.

e. that come to nought [2673 * katargeo] [Strong: from 2596 and 691; to be (render) entirely idle (useless), literally or figuratively:--abolish, cease, cumber, deliver, destroy, do away, become (make) of no (none, without) effect, fail, loose, bring (come) to nought, put away (down), vanish away, make void.]
