Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

1). In the process of anointing, the oil was poured upon the head of the individual.

a). Exodus 29:7 Then shalt thou take the anointing oil, and pour it upon his head, and anoint him.

b). Psalm 133:2 It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;

2). It is not clear if Samuel related to Jesse why he anointed his son David. Josephus says that Samuel secretly told David

b. came upon  [Strong: 6743 tsalach tsaw-lakh' or tsaleach {tsaw-lay'-akh}; a primitive root; to push forward, in various senses (literal or figurative, transitive or intransitive):--break out, come (mightily), go over, be good, be meet, be profitable, (cause to, effect, make to, send) prosper(-ity, -ous, - ously), to finish well].

2). Judges 14:5, 6 Then went Samson down, and his father and his mother, to Timnath, and came to the vineyards of Timnath: and, behold, a young lion roared against him.

14:6 And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.

c. David [Strong: 1732 David daw-veed' rarely (fully); Daviyd {daw-veed'}; from the same as 1730; loving; David, the youngest son of Jesse:--David.]

d. e. forward [Strong: 4605 ma`al mah'al: from 5927; properly, the upper part, used only adverbially with prefix upward, above, overhead, from the top, etc.:-- above, exceeding(-ly), forward, on (X very) high, over, up(-on, -ward), very.]

1). The meaning and use of the Hebrew word tsaleach translated “came upon” in 1 Samuel 16:13 and Judges 14:6 shed light on another part of David’s life. When David was insisting to King Saul that he let him go out and fight Goliath he recounted two instances in his life that would show he was capable of fighting Goliath. In both of these instances it is obvious that the Spirit of the LORD came upon David to enable him to kill both the lion and the bear.

a). 1 Samuel 17:34-36 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: 

17:35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

17:36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.

2). This is proven when we look at two other instances where the Spirit of God came upon Samson and enabled him to do supernatural things not possible for a normal man to do.

 a). Judges 14:19 And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and slew thirty men of them, and took their spoil, and gave change of garments unto them which expounded the riddle. And his anger was kindled, and he went up to his father's house.

b). Judges 15:14 And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him: and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.

3). This Hebrew word is also found in Joshua when the LORD is commanding Joshua and us to meditate God’s word.

a). Joshua 1:8  This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

b). The Hebrew word is translated “thou shalt make…prosperous”. Saints, do we desire to have the Holy Spirit come upon us? Meditate the word! 

4). Some other uses of the same Hebrew word. This is not a complete list but includes those linked to the Spirit of the LORD coming upon someone.

a). 1 Samuel 10:6 And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.

b). 1 Samuel 10:10 And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.

c). 1 Samuel 11:6 And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.

5). One of my favorites though not one that speaks of the Spirit of God coming upon us is speaking about being established in the things of God.

a). 2 Chronicles 20:20 And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.
