Genesis 10:10

 

 And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.

1. “And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh…”

 

a. And the beginning [Strong: 7225 re'shiyth ray-sheeth' from the same as 7218; the first, in place, time, order or rank (specifically, a firstfruit):--beginning, chief(-est), first(-fruits, part, time), principal thing.]

 

b. [of his] kingdom [Strong: 4467 mamlakah mam-law-kaw': from 4427; dominion, i.e. (abstractly) the estate (rule) or (concretely) the country (realm):--kingdom, king's, reign, royal.]

2. “…in the land of Shinar.”

 

a. [in the] land [Strong: 776 'erets eh'-rets: from an unused root probably meaning to be firm; the earth (at large, or partitively a land):--X common, country, earth, field, ground, land, X natins, way, + wilderness, world.]

b. [of] Shinar [Strong: 8152 Shin`ar shin-awr': probably of foreign derivation; Shinar, a plain in Babylonia:--Shinar.]

 

1). A fascinating revelation is found in a timeline according to Dake [see my notes on Genesis 11:10-26], that Abraham was born 352 years after the flood. The fascinating part is that looking at the comparative ages of the people born during this time after the flood, is that Abraham and Nimrod were probably contemporaries for possibly about 100 years!

 

2). After the flood the lengthy ages that men were living to, steadily decreased. Looking at the ages of comparative generations, it is safe to assume that Nimrod lived for at least 400 years. Nimrod was the grandson of Ham. Salah was the grandson of Shem and he lived for 433 years.

 

a). Genesis 11:14, 15 And Salah lived thirty years, and begat Eber:

And Salah lived after he begat Eber four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.

 

b). Also looking at the averages of the ages in Genesis 11, it is probable that Nimrod was born between 30 and 50 years after the flood.

1). Cush had 6 sons: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, Sabtecha, and Nimrod.

a). Raamah [Cush’ son and Ham’s grandson] had two sons: Sheba and Dedan.

 

2). The intriguing thing about Nimrod is Scripture does not mention his children but rather it mentions the cities he built.

 

a). Nimrod built babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh.

 

b). Out of Nimrod’s kingdom went Asshur[possibly Nimrod’s son or possibly Shem’s son: Genesis 10:22] and built Nineveh, Rehoboth, Calah and Resen.
