Do all things without murmurings and disputings:
a. NLT: Do everything without complaining and arguing,
b. NIV: Do everything without grumbling or arguing,
c. YLT: All things do without murmurings and reasonings,
d. Amplified Bible Classic: Do all things without grumbling and faultfinding and complaining [against God] and questioning and doubting [among yourselves],
e. Worrell Translation: Do all things without murmurings and disputings.
f. Wuest Translation: All things be constantly doing without discontented and secret mutterings and grumblings, and without descussions which carry an undertone of suspicion or doubt.
1. “Do all things…”
a. Do [Strong: 4160 poieo poy-eh'-o apparently a prolonged form of an obsolete primary; to make or do (in a very wide application, more or less direct):--abide, + agree, appoint, X avenge, + band together, be, bear, + bewray, bring (forth), cast out, cause, commit, + content, continue, deal, + without any delay, (would) do(-ing), execute, exercise, fulfil, gain, give, have, hold, X journeying, keep, + lay wait, + lighten the ship, make, X mean, + none of these things move me, observe, ordain, perform, provide, + have purged, purpose, put, + raising up, X secure, shew, X shoot out, spend, take, tarry, + transgress the law, work, yield.]
b. all [things] [Strong: 3956 pas pas including all the forms of declension; apparently a primary word; all, any, every, the whole:--all (manner of, means), alway(-s), any (one), X daily, + ever, every (one, way), as many as, + no(-thing), X thoroughly, whatsoever, whole, whosoever.]
1). We are to be doers of God’s word.
a). James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
2. “…without murmurings and disputings.”
a. without [Strong: 5565 choris kho-rece' adverb from 5561; at a space, i.e. separately or apart from (often as preposition):--beside, by itself, without.]
b. murmurings [Strong: 1112 goggusmos gong-goos-mos' from 1111; a grumbling:--grudging, murmuring.] [Vine: used in the sense of secret debate among people; displeasure or complaining (more private than in public).]
c. disputings [Strong: 1261 dialogismos dee-al-og-is-mos' from 1260; discussion, i.e. (internal) consideration (by implication, purpose), or (external) debate:--dispute, doubtful(-ing), imagination, reasoning, thought.] [dia-through; logismos-a reasoning] [Thayer: the thinking of a man deliberating with himself, a thought, inward reasoning, purpose, design, a deliberating, questioning about what is true, hesitation, doubting, disputing, arguing.] [An inward reasoning; doubting in 1 Timothy 2:8; imaginations in Romans 1:21; Through this thinking, man becomes a fool.]
1). Murmuring and disputing are thought processes that will keep us from being obedient to the word of God. In light of these words we can see the importance of a renewed mind. We will not be transformed into the image of Christ without the renewing of our minds.
a). Romans 12:1, 2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
2). We need to bring our thoughts into captivity, into the subjection unto the wisdom of the Scriptures.
a). 2 Corinthians 10:4, 5 For the weapons of our warfare are mighty through God to the pulling down of strongs;
10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.
b). 1 Peter 4:1, 2 Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;
4:2 That he no longer should live the rest of [his] time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.
c). Proverbs 4:20-22 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.
4:21 Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.
4:22 For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
d). Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
