Leviticus
18:26
Ye shall therefore keep my statutes and my
judgments, and shall not commit any of
these abominations; neither any
of your own nation, nor any stranger that sojourneth among you:
a. NLT: You must
obey all my decrees and regulations. You must not commit any of these
detestable sins. This applies both to native-born Israelites and to the
foreigners living among you.
b. NIV: But you
must keep my decrees and my laws. The native-born and the foreigners residing
among you must not do any of these detestable things,
c. Septuagint: And
ye shall keep all my statutes and all my ordinances, and ye shall do none of
these abominations; neither the native, nor the stranger that joins himself
with you:
d. Amplified
Bible: So you shall keep My statutes and My ordinances and shall not commit any
of these abominations, neither the native-born nor any stranger who sojourns
among you,
1. “Ye shall therefore keep my
statutes and my judgments…”
a. keep [8104 *
shamar][Strong: a primitive root; properly, to hedge about (as with
thorns), i.e. guard; generally, to protect, attend to, etc.:--beward, be circumspect,
take heed (to self), keep(-er, self), mark, look narrowly, observe, preserve,
regard, reserve, save (self), sure, (that lay) wait (for), watch(-man).]
b. statutes [2708
* chuqqah][Strong: appointed, custom,
manner, ordinance, site, statute.] ][Gesenius: that which is established or
defined, law, ordinance, practice, custom, right, privilege.] [Blue Letter
Bible: This word is translated “statute” 77 times and “ordinance” 22 times.]
1). This is the
same Hebrew word used in Leviticus 18:4 commanding the Israelites not to walk
in the “ordinances” of the Cannanites, which are described in Leviticus 18:6-23
which includes a variety of incest prohibitions, child sacrifice, homosexuality
and bestiality. The use of this word implies the nations of Canaan had laws,
ordinances or statutes that didn’t necessarily command the people to engage in
this behavior, but rather protected their right to do so, or perhaps some were
compulsory and other not.
c. judgments [4941
* mishpat][Strong: properly, a verdict
(favorable or unfavorable) pronounced judicially, especially a sentence or
formal decree (human or (participant's) divine law, individual or collective),
including the act, the place, the suit, the crime, and the penalty; abstractly,
justice, including a participant's right or privilege (statutory or customary),
or even a style:--+ adversary, ceremony, charge, X crime, custom, desert,
determination, discretion, disposing, due, fashion, form, to be judged,
judgment, just(-ice, -ly), (manner of) law(-ful), manner, measure, (due) order,
ordinance, right, sentence, usest, X worthy, + wrong.]
2. “…and shall not commit any of these abominations…”
a. shall not
commit [6213 * ‘asah][Strong: a
primitive root; to do or make, in the broadest sense and widest application (as
follows):--accomplish, advance, appoint, apt, be at, become, bear, bestow,
bring forth, bruise, be busy, X certainly, have the charge of, commit, deal
(with), deck, + displease, do, (ready) dress(-ed), (put in) execute(-ion),
exercise, fashion, + feast, (fight-)ing man, + finish, fit, fly, follow,
fulfill, furnish, gather, get, go about, govern, grant, great, + hinder, hold
((a feast)), X indeed, + be industrious, + journey, keep, labour, maintain,

vex, be (warr-)ior, work(-man), yield, use.]
b. abominations
[8441 * tow ‘ebah][Strong: properly, something disgusting (morally), i.e. (as
noun) an abhorrence; especially idolatry or (concretely) an idol:-- abominable
(custom, thing), abomination.]
3. “…neither any of your own nation, nor any stranger that
sojourneth among you.”
a. neither any of
your own nation [249 * ‘ezrach] [Strong: from 2224 (in the sense of
springing up); a spontaneous growth, i.e. native (tree or persons):--bay tree,
(home-)born (in the land), of the (one's own) country (nation).]
b. stranger [1616
* ger] [Strong: from 1481; properly, a guest; by implication, a
foreigner:--alien, sojourner, stranger.]
c. sojourneth [1481
* guwr] [Strong: a primitive root; properly, to turn aside from the road (for a
lodging or any other purpose), i.e. sojourn (as a guest); also to shrink, fear
(as in a strange place); also to gather for hostility (as afraid):--abide,
assemble, be afraid, dwell, fear, gather (together), inhabitant, remain,
sojourn, stand in awe, (be) stranger, X surely.]
d. [3482 * tavek]
[Strong: from an unused root meaning to sever; a bisection, i.e. (by
implication) the centre:--among(-st), X between, half, X (there- ,where-),
in(-to), middle, mid(-night), midst (among), X out (of), X through, X
with(-in).
