Matthew
6:22
The light of the body is the eye:
if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
a. NLT: “Your eye is a lamp that
provides light for your body. When your eye is good, your whole body is filled
with light.
b. NIV: “The eye is the lamp of the
body. If your eyes are healthy,fn your whole body will be full of light.
c. YLT: 'The lamp of the body is the
eye, if, therefore, thine eye may be perfect, all thy body shall be enlightened,
d. AMP: The eye is the lamp of the
body. So if your eye is sound, your entire body will be full of light.
e. Worrell Translation: “The lamp of
the body is the eye. If, therefore, your eye be sound, your whole body will be
full of light:
1. “The light of the body is the
eye…”
a. the light [3088 * luchnos] [Strong:
from the base of 3022; a portable lamp or other illuminator (literally or
figuratively):--candle, light.]
b. of the body [4983 * soma] [Strong: from
4982; the body (as a sound whole), used in a very wide application, literally
or figuratively:--bodily, body, slave.]
c. is [2076 * esti] [Strong: third
person singular present indicative of 1510; he (she or it) is; also (with
neuter plural) they are:--are, be(-long), call, X can(-not), come, consisteth,
X dure for a while, + follow, X have, (that) is (to say), make, meaneth, X must
needs, + profit, + remaineth, + wrestle.]
d. the eye [3788 * ophthalmos]
[Strong: from 3700; the eye (literally or figuratively); by implication,
vision; figuratively, envy (from the jealous side-glance):--eye, sight.]
2. “…if therefore thine eye be
single…”
a. if [1437 * ean] [Strong: from
1487 and 302; a conditional particle; in case that, provided, etc.; often used
in connection with other particles to denote indefiniteness or
uncertainty:--before, but, except, (and) if, (if) so, (what-, whither-)soever,
though, when (-soever), whether (or), to whom, (who-)so(-ever).]
b. therefore [3767 * oun] [Strong: apparently
a primary word; (adverbially) certainly, or (conjunctionally) accordingly:--and
(so, truly), but, now (then), so (likewise then), then, therefore, verily,
wherefore.]
c. thine [4675 * sou] [Strong: genitive
case of 4771; of thee, thy:--X home, thee, thine (own), thou, thy.]
d. eye [3788 * ophthalmos] [Strong: from
3700; the eye (literally or figuratively); by implication, vision;
figuratively, envy (from the jealous side-glance):--eye, sight.]
e. be [5600 * o] [Strong: including the oblique forms, as well as es
ace; e ay; etc. the subjunctive of 1510; (may, might, can, could, would,
should, must, etc.; also with 1487 and its comparative, as well as with other
particles) be:--+ appear, are, (may, might, should) be, X have, is, + pass the
flower of her age, should stand, were.]
f. single [573 * haplous] [Thayer:
simple, single, whole, good fulfilling its office, sound.] [Strong: probably
from 1 (as a particle of union) and the base of 4120; properly, folded
together, i.e. single (figuratively, clear):--single.]
1). There is universal agreement that
one of the meanings of to be “single” in eye is to have a “healthy” or “sound”
eye. The metaphor when compared with the next verse is profound.
2). Barnes Notes: Single: steady,
devoted to one object. Not confused, as persons' eyes are when they see double.
3). Vincent’s Word Studies: The picture
underlying this adjective is that of a piece of cloth or other material, neatly
folded once, and without a variety of complicated folds. Hence the idea of
simplicity or singleness (compare simplicity from the Latin simplex; semel,
once; plicare, to fold). So, in a moral sense, artless, plain, pure. Here
sound, as opposed to evil or diseased. Possibly with reference to the
double-mindedness and indecision condemned in Matthew 6:24.
3. “…thy whole body shall be full
of light.”
a. thy [4675 * sou] [Strong: genitive
case of 4771; of thee, thy:--X home, thee, thine (own), thou, thy.]
b. whole [3650 * holos] [Strong: a
primary word; "whole" or "all", i.e. complete (in extent,
amount, time or degree), especially (neuter) as noun or adverb:--all,
altogether, every whit, + throughout, whole.]
c. body [4983 * soma] [Strong: from
4982; the body (as a sound whole), used in a very wide application, literally
or figuratively:--bodily, body, slave.]
d. shall be [2071 *esomai] [Strong: future
of 1510; will be:--shall (should) be (have), (shall) come (to pass), X may
have, X fall, what would follow, X live long, X sojourn.]
e. full of light [5460 * photeinos] [Strong:
from 5457; lustrous, i.e. transparent or well-illuminated
(figuratively):--bright, full of light.]
1). Throughout Scripture, “light” means
revelation, understanding and wisdom.
