No man can serve two masters: for
either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the
one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
a. NLT: “No one can serve two masters.
For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and
despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
b. NIV: “No one can serve two masters.
Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the
one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
c. YLT: 'None is able to serve two
lords, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will hold to
the one, and despise the other; ye are not able to serve God and Mammon.
d. Amplified Bible: No one can serve
two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will
stand by and be devoted to the one and despise and be against
the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (deceitful riches, money,
possessions, or whatever is trusted in).
e. Worrell Translation: “No one can
serve two masters; for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or he

4. “…Ye cannot serve God and
mammon.”
a. Ye cannot [3756 * ou] [Strong: also

word; the absolute negative (compare 3361) adverb; no or not:--+ long, nay,
neither, never, no (X man), none, (can-)not, + nothing, + special, un(-worthy),

1). [dunamai] [Strong: of uncertain
affinity; to be able or possible:--be able, can (do, + -not), could, may,
might, be possible, be of power.]
2). The Greek word for “power ability
and might” is coupled with “an absolute negative” which means “you cannot do”,
hence, “Ye cannot”.
b. serve [1398 * douleuo] [Strong: from 1401; to be a slave to (literal or
figurative, involuntary or voluntary):--be in bondage, (do) serve(-ice).]
c. God [2316 * theos] [Strong: of
uncertain affinity; a deity, especially (with 3588) the supreme Divinity;
figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very:--X exceeding, God, god(-ly,
-ward).]
d. and [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently,
a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force;

e. mammon [3126 * mammonas] [Strong: of
Chaldee origin (confidence, i.e. wealth, personified); mammonas, i.e. avarice
(deified):--mammon.]
1). As with anything money can be
deified and turned into a god to be worshipped and served, but as the verse
below testifies, Jesus said we can “be faithful in the unrighteous mammon”. In
other words serve God faithfully and still handle money in a godly way and not
be defiled.
2). It is interesting that in two
instances when Jesus was speaking of money he referred to it as “unrighteous
mammon”
a). Luke 16:9 And I say unto you, Make
to yourselves friends of the mammon
of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into
everlasting habitations.
b). Luke 16:11 If therefore ye have
not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon,
who will commit to your trust the true riches?
