Romans 9:27
Esaias also crieth
concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand
of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:
1. “Esaias also crieth concerning Israel…”
a. Esaias [Strong: 2268 Hesaias hay-sah-ee'-as of
Hebrew origin (3470); Hesaias (i.e. Jeshajah), an Israelite:--Esaias.]
b. also [Strong: 1161 de deh a
primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and,
but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]
c. crieth [Strong: 2896 krazo krad'-zo a
primary verb; properly, to "croak" (as a raven) or scream, i.e.
(genitive case) to call aloud (shriek, exclaim, intreat):--cry (out).]
d. concerning [Strong: 5228 huper hoop-er' a
primary preposition; "over", i.e. (with the genitive case) of place,
above, beyond, across, or causal, for the sake of, instead, regarding; with the
accusative case superior to, more than:--(+ exceeding, abundantly) above, in
(on) behalf of, beyond, by, + very chiefest, concerning, exceeding (above,
-ly), for, + very highly, more (than), of, over, on the part of, for sake of,
in stead, than, to(-ward), very. In the comparative, it retains many of the
above applications.]
e. Israel [Strong: 2474 Israel is-rah-ale' of
Hebrew origin (3478); Israel (i.e. Jisrael), the adopted name of Jacob,
including his descendants (literally or figuratively):--Israel.]
2. “…Though the number of the children of Israel be as the
sand of the sea …”
a. Though [Strong: 1437 ean eh-an' from
1487 and 302; a conditional particle; in case that, provided, etc.; often used
in connection with other particles to denote indefiniteness or
uncertainty:--before, but, except, (and) if, (if) so, (what-, whither-)soever,
though, when (-soever), whether (or), to whom, (who-)so(-ever).]

including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their
inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others

a primary word; a "son" (sometimes of animals), used very widely of
immediate, remote or figuratively, kinship:--child, foal, son.]

m. sea [Strong: 2281 thalassa thal'-as-sah probably
prolonged from 251; the sea (genitive case or specially):--sea.]
1). The promise given to Abraham
and Jacob were comparing the dust of the earth and the stars of the sky.
a). Genesis 13:14-16 And the Lord said unto Abram, after
that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the
place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:
13:15 For all the land which thou
seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.
13:16 And I will make thy seed as
the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then
shall thy seed also be numbered.
b). Genesis 15:4-6 And, behold,
the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine
heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.
15:5 And he brought him forth
abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able
to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.
15:6 And he believed in the Lord;
and he counted it to him for righteousness.
c). Genesis 28:13, 14 And, behold,
the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of
Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee
will I give it, and to thy seed;
13:14 And thy seed shall be as the
dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east,
and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the
families of the earth be blessed.
2). Paul was citing Isaiah in this
verse.
a). Isaiah 10:20-22 And it shall
come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and such as are escaped
of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay upon him that smote them; but
shall stay upon the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
10:21 The remnant shall return,
even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God.
10:22 For though thy people Israel
be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return: the consumption
decreed shall overflow with righteousness.
3. “…a remnant shall be saved:”
a. a remnant [Strong: 2640 kataleimma kat-al'-ime-mah from
2641; a remainder, i.e. (by implication) a few:--remnant.]
b. shall be saved [Strong: 4982 sozo sode'-zo from
a primary sos (contraction for obsolete saos, "safe"); to save, i.e.
deliver or protect (literally or figuratively):--heal, preserve, save (self),
do well, be (make) whole.]
1). The remnant is the number
comparable to all Jews born on the earth.
