 Acts 4:13

Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.

1. “Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men…”

2. “...they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.”

i. Jesus [Strong: 2424. Iesous ee-ay-sooce' of Hebrew origin (3091); Jesus (i.e. Jehoshua), the name of our Lord and two (three) other Israelites:--Jesus.]


1). The words Peter and John spoke were from the Holy Ghost. Jesus prophetically had told his disciples that the days would come when they would be delivered up to councils because of their faith in him. He also told them that it would be the Holy Ghost who would be speaking through them.

 

a). Mark 13:9-11 But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten: and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them.

13:10 And the gospel must first be published among all nations.

13:11But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost.

 

2). The spiritual effect of being filled with the Holy Ghost must be noted. Even though the Sanhedrin perceived or understood that Peter and John were not highly educated, they marveled at their boldness in declaring spiritual truths concerning the Messiah. The Sanhedrin were the so called experts, the highly educated yet they could not speak against these because a miracle had occurred and there was no disputing it.
