1). Robert A. Tourville, The Acts of the Apostles, p.80. The “rulers”, designates civil and religious leaders. The “elders” indicates family heads of importance. The “scribes” signifies learned men, whose duty it was to copy, preserve and explain the Law and teachings of the Rabbis. The group that assembled was the Sanhedrin, the council that had the highest civil and religious power in the nation. The council consisted of about 70-72 members and was composed of 24 priests, 24 elders, and 24 scribes presided over by the high priest.
